Gonna' MISS Carmichel.......

Of all the gun hacks in all the glossy rags in all the world.........it's time to lose this one. :( After 35 or so yrs representing arguably the best and most influential all-round outdoor mag on the planet, Jim Carmichel is standing down, retiring at his peak.

I like a lot of writers for a lot of things but rarely do I enjoy one for as many reasons as Jim Carmichel.

Firstly dude can write.....Witness his writeup in this mo OL on the venerable Weatherbyby Mark V.

"Compare, for example, the .270 WSM to the ancient .270 Weatherby Magnum, and you'll discover that even in it's wheelchair, the Weatherby goes about 100fps faster per bullet weight than the pudgy newcomer. That doesn't mean that the .270 Weatherby will kill a deer or elk any deader, but the comparison helps us know the color of the sky." ....... only Jim ;)

Secondly dude can shoot....he doesn't just SHOOT Bench Rest, he wins his share. And as the article earlier in the mag so succinctly states "he comprehends firearms on a level usually reserved for the people who design them."........ that's Jim.

And thirdly and most importantly, Jim stands shoulder to shoulder with the likes of Finn Aagard and Elmer Keith as one who sees things clearly and tells it like he sees it. He writes a liddle like Ruark (without the emotional baggage) making real distinctions and meaningful points. This article on the Mk V is a good example. In testing the 100yd accuracy Jim notes not only the typical 3-shot "glossy-mag grouping" but the more telling 5-shot group.

3-shot 100yd = .635 in. Not bad you say :)

but then we see the 5-shot groups and know the Wby for what it is.....a fine factory rifle.

5-shot 100yd = 1.565 in.

Not quite so impressive, and a wonderful example of the enormous gulf between 3-shot and 5-shot groups....... typical Jim Carmichel.

And the story of the shy young Jim asking his neighbor girl how she got those beautiful freckles..........JUST Jim :D

Gonna' miss him......It's been a good run.

He will be missed for sure. His book "The Book Of The Rifle" has been read and reread and then read some more by me. A very good read loaded with information. I would recommend it to anyone who hasn't read it.

Hopefully that means he will make more matches and gets to play more with his rifles. He is a very personable person and a pleasure to shoot with.

Don't worry Al, retirement will just give Jim more time to devote to benchrest. :D

Speaking of benchrest; when are you going to join us at the Super Shoot and Nationals? There's nothing like it! :)
