..or not? What is your technique and why do you feel that it is better one way or the other. As of now I do use the stop!

I ALWAYS use a stop because I ALWAYS want to return to the same spot for each shot. I firmly believe that consistency is part of good gun handling. :)

To Stop, Or Not To Stop

Through the years, I have gravitated from using a stop, to not using one.

We tend to go through ups and downs in this game. In the past, I would develop a bad case of verticle, here someone say "front stops cause verticle". Ceased using the stop, finally get a decent barrel, start using the front stop again, shot good again, and decide that was the way to go.

Current World Champion Gene Bukys doesn't use a front stop, Charles Huckeba, who certainly knows how to make two bullets touch, does. Both ran out of places to put trophys long time ago........jackie.

Jan,
In search of BR nirvana I have tried just about every possible BR bag/rest set up imaginable. The bag squeezing no front stop method is sweet but subject to personal interpretation and influence.
Being a carpenter, the need arises when in the production mode to make exact repetitive cuts( drawer parts, banister rails etc)and the thing that makes that possible is a positive indexing stop.Measure once and cut a dozen exact pieces all the same length simply by setting the stock against the fixed stop and making the cut ( a monkey could do it).Crank up the music and keep your fingers away from the blade. You could not achieve the same results by measuring and marking each cut.
Trying everything(or every style of shooting)is the only way to really satisfy your inquisitiveness and the journey itself will make you more confident in the style you choose.

I was told

at one time to push up against the stop then to pull back ever so slightly so as to not touch.

I try it all even at matches trying to figure things out........:eek::eek:

One bad happening from using a front stop is encouraging more and more shoulder pressure after each shot, especially if you are a "runner", not good.

I don't know the answer to this one but wasn't it Ratigan in his book that said he believed you needed to experiment with positioning the stop in different places to help tune the rifle? So how our guns sit on the rest must make a difference in POI or vibration dampening and that would certainly make sense why it's important to have the rifle in the same spot for every shot.
