Someone suggested that I move this post to here. I hope you don't mind. :)

First, Hello everyone.
I got this rifle to feed my reloading hobby. I've had it for only a couple of days. The rifle is two months old. A young man bought it, and couldn't get into shooting it, so I traded an AR that I had for it, we traded even. I had $700 invested in the AR.

I was going to write a brief review of the Savage 10FP at the range today, but it kind of reviewed itself. I let a few people shoot it at 100 meters, the longest post at the range I go to. Everybody got a bullseye. Isn't that enough said? As one man showed up, we walked down to the targets, I had to put some black pasties over my bullet hole. (yes 1 hole, probably 25 shots at a that time. It took 2 pasties to get the ragged hole.

He said,"You must be shooting for fun, because you sure don't need any practice." Now, I never think of myself as a great shooter, not by any stretch, so, compliments like this from strangers mean a lot to me.

Of the three other people that shot it. One man wants to buy one asap. They really liked it. It does not happen often, but today, I had the most accurate rifle at the range, with the Savage. :) :) It felt good to have a very accurate rifle, and I can tell that this is going to be fun to do.

Recoil is almost non-existant, thanks to the heavy barrel and the 1 1/2 or 2 pounds of birdshot that I put in the hollow area of the stock. The Simmons 6.5x20x44 scope was good enough for me today. It may not have been my first choice, but it was on the rifle when I got it.
I shot from a rest, but it always seemed to be a little high. I was not real comfortable for some of the shooting, my groups went to about an inch on a few rounds. I re-arranged everything, and got down to 1/2 inch consistantly. i had a few called flyers, some wind, but I was pretty happy. A bipod is on my must have list. I'm off to explore the rest of the forum. Nice to meet you. - Ted

Sooo, IS it a 223??

Are you handloading specifically for it? Or shooting your AR loads or out of the box...... hows'about pix of the groups? Just something cool about the rifle putting them where you point eh :D

It is a .308 I shot 50 handloads out of it this morning. 150 grainers, but, I was using them up. I have a few hundred 180's on my bench. The powder was 42 grains of IMR 3031.

If it were me I'd nix the bipod and get a taller stool;)

Good shooting Ted. Stick with Savages and the odds will be in your favor.

you ought to take that gun to a shoot if it can do that. I wouldn't change nothin- just shoot it.

Hello Dusty,
Nice to meet you. Next month, I am going to a 500 meter range with a friend, at his club. I have never shot at that distance, neither has he. He has been shooting at 100 meters with his Remington PSS. It is a .308 as well. We have both enjoyed a fun competitiveness for over 20 years. Best friends. He does not know about my new bench shooter, I am trying to get some practice in. He wants to show me the ropes with his Remmy when we go to his club. :D Maybe I can surprise him and shoot better. I'll have much better ammo, handloads, he always likes to buy the cheap stuff. I have about a 2 pound heavier rifle, probably a better trigger, the accutrigger, and I have a better scope. He has a $50 3X9x40. I have seen email photos of his rifle, he says that I saw it in his safe, but I don't remember. His vision is very much better than mine, but, we are using scopes. My rifle is heavier, though with a 20" barrel, I believe that he has a 26" that is fluted. It should be some good fun, maybe if I shoot good enough, he will go on and start handloading like I have been trying to get him to do. He has some handloading equipment in a box, in his garage, and keeps thinking about it. At any rate, it will be fun to shoot with a good friend. It always is. Best - Ted

Ted,
What are the 180’s that you have on the bench? If they are Match Kings you will be in good shape. What is the velocity you are getting w/ the 20” Tube? I loaded some 175 Berger VLDs for a buddy’s .308 using 41.0 gr. of IMR 3031 and got 2750 out of his 26” Tube. If you try the Berger 175 VLD and can hit 2600 fps, you can make it work at 1000.
Like Charles E mentioned over on the centerfire section, come up to Ferguson, NC and shoot Factory Class at 1000 yards. You will have a blast. Myself and a couple of guys from SE Mississippi travel through Atlanta on our way up to compete at Hawk’s Ridge.
Forget about the Bi-Pod if you are going to be shooting from the bench. It will work, but you can put that money towards a Sinclair BR Rest #04-2630, #2 cordura bag and a cordura eared rear bag. Then you’ll be in business.
As well as that Savage shoots you can run with us in Factory Class. Go to http://www.nc1000ydshooters.com/ and check out the match results. You’ll have a blast.

Baron,
Thank you for the invitation, I am very, very flattered. I am in this for recreation, I could never devote the time and travel to go to meets and compete. I'll never be that good on my best day. I am only wanting to pick up some good tips, and techniques for my excursions. Best - Ted

Look up the shoots in your area...

I'll never be that good on my best day.

I have heard this comment alot.... You like bench shooting and accuracy... There are IBS/NBRSA Score and Group shoots in Georgia... Look the shooters up and ya might discover this is IT for ya!

am only wanting to pick up some good tips, and techniques for my excursions. Best - Ted

Nothing wrong with that... Check out the short and long range games... Ya just might get the BUG....!

good luck,
cale

There are some good informal shooting competitions at Tennga, Georgia at Camp Shooters. That shouldn't be that far from you and would be a lot of fun. I went there a few times last year and thoroughly enjoyed it. They have a different shoot about every weekend--muzzleloaders, centerfire action, bench, pistol, and cast bullet. It's interesting to see all the different types. It would be a good place to start without getting into the big leagues.
