Facts on loads for 6.5x284

Guy's, need some help on the proper loads for this rifle. I have MK 162gr. bullets and H-4831 powder. I have loaded 10 rounds at 49gr. but their is something about this load I don't like. This is not enough powder to have a compressed load, not even close. Will a load like this not be inconsistent? The powder can move freely in the case from one round to the next. Would a compressed load be more consistent? As none of my reloading manuals have this round in them, I am going to ask what the max load is for this rifle, and where on the net can I find these stats? All the info that I have found, the overall length is 3.228in. this is where I have started. I like to be as close as possible to the lands of the rifling, but with the length of this bullet at 3.228 in. the unshot round will not extract from the gun. The tip of the bullet hangs on the front of the chamber mouth. I have not shot this round yet want to ask questions first, so please help!!!

Guessin you mean '142' MK bullets?

No exerience w/ H4831 in this cartridge, so can't comment specifically other than suggest you look at the load map at the bottom of the page listed above for some ideas. I have some air space rattling around in my H4350 loads, but I don't think its enough to hurt much.

If you are worried about airspace, try H1000 - a few do use it very successfully with compressed loads. However as the others above have said you probably shouldn't be concerned about using 4831 when 4350 takes much less space and is used extensively by many top shooters in the 6.5-284.

This too is nothing unusual. How often in target shooting do you need to extract a live round, and with most actions you can extract it through the back of the action with the bolt.

If you are using the 142 SMK and not the !62, you will need to use more
H4831sc. Run a ladder test, since you are at 49.0 grains go to 49.5-50.0
etc.

You are aprox 3.5 gr below what a lot of competitive shooters use ((if it is a 142 gr bullet))....and that will take care of a lot of air space in the case. Roger...
