Eratic Abolt

Hello all,

I have a Browning Abolt micro hunter in 22-250. It is a 20 in bbl and 1/14 twist if I remember correctly. Scope is Leupold VX 3LR 4.5x14 30mm tube AO and leupy bases and rings. It tends to be rather eratic and I am not sure why and thought maybe some of you fellas may have some ideas.

Sighted dead on at 200 yards. Next time I check zero it might be 4 inches high and 3 inches off to the side....resight it in and next time I check the zero at the range it is 4 inches low and 5 inches left. It generally holds about 1 inch groups. I have cleaned every 25 shots or so with butches and JB bore compound and borebright.

Bedding maybe?

No idea. Also, does a guy normally see quite a difference in terms of point of impact using a rest and bag and then switch to a bipod and the same rear bag? I zeroed it using an adjustable front rest and then just pop by the range and check the zero using my bipod and it goes from 1 inch to 3 or 4 inches @ 100yards or worse. I had a lucky 3 shot group @ 200 yards that you can hide under a dime and then I checked my zero about 3 wks later and I cant keep them on a paper plate at the same distance. I shot two of my other rifles that same day in the same conditions and both stayed about 1 inch @ 200yrds but the Abolt was all over and seems to have no cure.

I am about ready to run it thru a woodchipper and buy somthing else.

Thanks fellas,

Jaybic

What ammo are you using? Handloads, factory, weight bullet, etc... So it groups fine after zeroing, and changes over time? I would check to make sure that everything is nice and tight, then the bedding, and make sure that you don't have the stock touching the barrel anywhere. Have you tried another scope?

I am using handloads. It is Nosler brass/CCI Br primers/35.5 grs of H4895 and a 50 gr vmax. Nothing is loose and I have tried 3 different Leupold scopes(3.5x10 and 6x18). I can slide a dollar bill all the way up to the receiver as I have sanded it for clearance when I first got the rifle and all the action screws are tight but not torqued to a certain ft/lbs(maybe an issue?).

Buy yeah, thats it. You sight it in and it seems every time you go back to the range the point of impact is different by enough that you cant trust it as a dependable coyote calling rifle which is what its for. 4 inches low @ 100 yards is a clean miss.

Thanks again,

How many shots are you shooting before you reach zero? Are you zeroing with a hot barrel. I have had factory rifles that if the barrel got hot it would change POI once it cooled off. Try shooting one 3 shot group then wait a couple days and shoot another 3 shot group and see if it groups move. I generally zero my deer rifles one shot a day on the same target until I get it like I want it. I'm not shooting groups at live animals, and it lets me know that the first shot from a cold barrel (the one that counts) is gonna be where it is supposed to be. Just a possibility. ~Jackson
