Economy priced rifles and the Stevens 200 in particular.

About 2 years back I purchased a Stevens 200 rifle in calibre 300 Win Mag for $399 Australian, fitted a Zeiss conquest scope in weaver mounts and a rifle basics trigger. That rifle is easiest to shoot and the most consistently accurate hunting rifle I have owned and I have owed a lot, Sakos, Remingtons, Rugers, Winchesters and a handful of Mauser 98 derivitives. I Nearly cried when I saw the new Savage Axis, the Stevens was plain, but to me the Axis looks like junk. Just wanted to share with other members my discovery, so if you are in the market for an accurate rifle try a Stevens 200 though I suspect the secret is out as they are getting hard to find.:)

Yep the new axis is a waste. What a shame really. I am sure there is a strong market for crap like this. I won't be buying one that's for fact. Lee

Recently bought a left Hand youth Axis in 7mm-08 for a nephew...yes thee look junky, trigger is not good but I got it to about 4 lb. Borescoped it and figured we'd be re-barreling it soon as the bore had a lot of reamer marks. Well after shooting it with a Redfield 2-7 on it I was pleasantly shocked. It shot easily sub minute, about 3/4 " groups. It will work well for him I think.

Those cheap rifles that won't shoot.M

Axis are junk, 6 lb trigger & no accuracy.

My heavy barrel 220 Swift would have difficulty keeping pace with your Axis. Inexpensive rifles have come a long way so why do they have to look inexpensive, surely it would cost no more to make a pretty rifle as an ugly one?
