Current Status of Hunter Class BR Competition

Hey Y'all,

I would like to know what the status of Hunter class BR is these days. From what I can gather from the NBRSA Magazine this class is very limited compared to other classes of competition. Is Hunter class shrinking, growing, steady?

The reason I ask is that I recently aquired a Hunter class BR rig. I can't decide if I should sell it or hang on to it and get into the sport. The closest matches to me that I know of are about 2.5 hours away. My local club (Prickly Pear Sportsmans Club in Helena Montana) used to hold Hunter class matches regularly but no longer does so. I don't want to sink any money or time into a sport that will end up going extinct in my corner of the world.

Your input is appreciated,

Lawrence

who would say that Hunter is dead, it just hasn't found a grave. I for one am very much NOT of that camp. And you, living in the Helena area, are in a part of the country where HBR is still going. I know that there have been some clubs stop shooting it, but Billings, Wenatchee, Hamilton, Lewis and Clark in ID, and Casper are all still shooting Hunter in you back yard.

It would be great if we all had an active club within a 1/2 hour drive, but that is not available today. There just aren't that many ranges. So we have to either travel or not shoot. Or get a new range started at home. Or help resurrect an former range, like Prickly Pear. That was always one I wanted to go to, till the big forest fire burned them out. I, for one, am a bit jealous that you have so much HBR available to you. And with the addition of VFS to NBRSA's quiver, you have a lot of score shooting prospects. Here in the upper Mid-West where I am, w/o shooting group as well as score, things would be pretty dry.

If it does die....

I'll just put my 36X Weaver on it and shoot VFS. I'm not convinced that my 30/47 HBR is not as accurate as the 30BRs that dominate VFS. It will be a hard sell for Hunter rigs since the action is so different from the group rifles. So...just put a high power scope on your rig and shoot VFS.

I run a monthly Hunter/VFS match here in Austin, Tx. Usually anywhere from eight to 16 shooters show up, with about eight VFS shooters and four to six Hunter Class shooters. We sure have a great time.

Thank You

for the information guys. This definately helps me make up my mind what to do with this rig. I have decided to keep it and compete with it.
