Crowning method

Just wondering what method you expienced guys are using to cut your crowns. I have been using a small (1/8) HSS bit cutting 45 degrees for .016 from where it starts to cut.
Heres a picture (not finished or polished)
Thanks,

Dave Kiff's cutter. It takes the same bushings as his reamers. You don't even need power. A few turns of the chuck by hand and you'll get a perfect crown everytime.

Jonathan,

I'm no pro but, I cut the majority of my crowns flat with no recess. I normally use an extremely sharp solid carbide boring bar with a small radius on the cutting tip. I cut them at 1000 rpm and make light cuts from the bore out. I have cut recessed crowns using this method, just set the compound to whatever angle you want, 45 degrees normally for me. Use a Q-tip to slide into the bore and remove looking for any strands pulling from the Q-tip indicating burrs. Repeat until the Q-tip comes out clean.

Hope this helps,
Med.

Just a quick question. I have a couple of Dave Kiff piloted crowning tools.

Do you think that with the proper diameter pilot fit to a crowning tool, that the crown could be cut enough off center to radically change the point of impact? Like 5 minutes at 600 yds?

I personally don't think it is possible but thought I would ask others as well.

Bob
