Crimp or not to Crimp?

I'm using the Reading competition seating die which I don't believe crimps in any way. Do bench shooters use any kind of crimp? If so why or why not. Thanks squirrelyhunter..

Shooters wanting precision accuracy believe with a great degree of supporting evidence that the best accuracy occurs when each component is identical to the last & is assembled exactly the same as the last.

Crimping has at least two possibilities for negating that situation:

  • There's a high liklihood that crimps will not be consistently applied round to round (for a number of reasons)
  • A crimp has a distinct probability of randomly distorting the projectiles which has been manufactured to high standards.
Carry hunting rounds stuffed into the magazine of a rifle with a certain amount of recoil & it could offer a compromise answer.

Crimping is a method used to lock loaded round to a certain length for usage when carrying in a magazine. It requires a groove around the bullet to fold the case lip into. I have never seen a custom match bullet with a crimp groove. Even if dealing with handloading factory bullets with crimp grooves crimping would give too much variance in release pressure for anything resembling maximum accuracy.

Crimping has no place in BR loading.

Dick,

Now you have: Sierra 77 grain bullet w/ cannelure.

Midway USA: http://www.midwayusa.com/viewproduc... - Match & Target-_-PriceCompListing-_-129185

Probably available from other distributors as well.

You are probably correct that BR shooters don't use these bullets, however, the US military does. The difference in accuracy compared to standard service ammunition is noticable:
  • Mk 262 Mod 1 (5.56 loads w/ 77 grain Sierra): 1.5 MOA
  • M855 (62 grain FMJBT): ~3 MOA.

Well yeahh but...but... the military is The Cutting Edge y'know. This is where all the innovation comes from!!!!

"They've got stuff thet you don' KNOW about!!! Stuff that would Blow Your Mind!!!"

So sooner or later we'll all come to our senses
