Considering Cone Bolt?

I am preparing to re-barrel my Rem 700 VSSF from .220 Swift to a .20 cal based on the .220 Russian case. I will be ordering a new bolt from PT&G and was considering one of his cone modifications. Is there a down side, other than the modest price increase over a more standard configuration? Thanks.

You might want to ask about whether the coned bolt will feed from a magazine, if that is what you want to do. If you're doing single shot, go for it.

I love a coned bolt. I sold a great shooting 30br because it didnt have a coned bolt. The 30br i had, i couldnt feed the cartridge with the bolt. I had to push the cartridge all the way in with my finger. I hated that. This new BAT rifle will feed by simply closing the bolt, and thats a huge plus for me. I like them!!! Lee

RCE1,

I have a cone bolt on my Rem 700 Hunterclass rifle...it has the Mike Bryant magazine conversion to feed 6mmbr cartridges...before I re-chambered to 6mmbr from 6ppc it feed without any problems and still does now it's a BR.

The coned bolt has no advantage "other than the cool factor" when feeding from the Mag. But it will allow you to throw a round on top of the mag and feed it into chamber. That's a plus.

Isn't the real issue - -

the shoulders in the barrel without a cone? I have often wondered if simply chamfering(sp?) the shoulders in the barrel would allow a flat bolt face to feed rounds a lot easie?

If you chamfered the chamber entrance with a flat bolt face, that portion of the case would be unsupported when firing. I think that would lead to case failure.

I'd agree with you, Butch.

On my Viper drop port, with it's Remington style nose, I always chamfer the chamber entrance about .010".

I guess my question would be - how much is too much?

I have had case seperation failures in the past. The webb - case junction is usually several hundred thousanths north of the bolt face. I think it's a non- issue to put a simple 45* chamfer on the edges.
