case preping

I was at a friends house the other day.he is a 1000 yard shooter.watched his case prepping and was amazed at the effored he put into it.now,he poined his bullets sized gis cases and took great a lot of small steps to make sure his cases were good to shoot.now what do you short range shooters do to your cases .gary b

Well I am a score shooter, Most of the score shooters shoot the 30BR. We all start out with Lapua 6mm Norma BR cases. Some have dedicated barrels to blow them out, I just run a K&M 6 to 30 expander mandrel into the necks to expand them to 30 cal, then I turn the necks until they are .010 thick all the way around. I have a .330 chamber so with the bullets that I use, it gives me the .328-328.5 loaded round that I'm looking for. Next I take a wad of Never Dull and spin the cases in the wad to shine about 1/3rd of the case, the shoulder and the neck. To me it helps me see the exact color that I'm looking for when I do the next step which is to anneal the cases. After I anneal my cases, I go back and give it another polish with the Never Dull on the outside, and then I take a bronze brush and ream the inside of the necks a few strokes because I find that the brass gets tacky both inside and out after annealing. Next I trim the my cases to 1.520 because my chamber is 1.532. Then put a slight chamfer on the inside of the neck. That's about it. Some people weight their cases. Some people don't anneal after expanding and neck turning. I was thinking about buying a bullet pointing die and metplat trimmer because I know they work for the 1000 yard shooters. I called up Mr. Hoover in PA who makes both of them. I talked to him for about 20 minutes. He told me he doesn't know of anybody doing that for short range yardage. He wanted me to send him 50 bullets and he would do them up for me to try, but after I talked to Bart Sauter of Bart's Bullets fame, he told me that he did experimental work with that idea at short ranges and it didn't help at all, so I just abandoned the idea after talking to him. Thank God we have people like Bart, Lou Murdica, Randy Robinette and others who have put in the time to experiment and report what works and what doesn't so we can concentrate on other things like getting the Hell out of this state that I made the mistake of moving to.

I lived there. They get it from property owners. Called it a school tax i think. Plus vehicle inspections, crazy license renewal prices and so forth. Arkansas is much cheaper.

I was leaning more toward TN. Where I live in Maine winters are just horrible. 6 months of this BS is more than I can take. It's great here the rest of the year, but it's hard living. I'll leave this for the locals who don't know any better because they were born up here and are use to this type of living. I guess it's better than where I grew up in Mass. 8 million people there in a big F'in hurry to get nowhere. I guess no matter where you live, every state has it's strong and weak points.

A friend has a summer home in Jefferson, NC and I must say, I would give that area a good look. Very nice.

Come on a little farther south. It only snows about 2 times every 5 yrs down here. TN and NC has the good southern people with northern weather which is better than actually being up there for sure.

You got that right as far as good southern people. People down south are a little different than northern people for sure as a whole in a good way. More laid back, genuine, down to earth, and friendlier. Don't get me wrong, there are some good people up here, but not as a whole. I've been down south hundred's of time and not once was I given any crap for being a Yankee. Everybody and I mean everybody treated me like one of their kin. Can't beat southern hospitality!

I lived in the NY Adirondacks for nearly 17 years. One time my wife and I were going to a restaurant on a dock in Lake Champlain. There was a fork in the road and I stopped at a gas station to get directions. I asked the guy if he knew which branch in the fork in the road led to the restaurant. He replied "Yep". That was typical.

Sounds typical Jerry. Thank Christ you left that commi state. New York & CT are the last 2 places on earth that I would want to live in. God those 2 states are so politically screwed-up.

Mass vs NY

Jim, What do mean? Only a relatively, small part of NY State is left, good old NYC and the surrounding area. The rest of the State is pretty right. Now, Mass is totally whack, New York, Ct and the rest of the country goes to Mass to find the real whackos. Think "The Pale Injun", Barney Frank, Obama's Mini Me, the former Governor. Not to mention the hundreds if not thousands of local hacks that daily screw up the government. But hey the Sox and the Pats are Great! Cheers, Charles

Ya we've had some beauties in Mass all right, case in point that useless Kennedy family. God saw fit to wipe them out one by one, and took the biggest loser Ted out last. He should of been taken out way before John & Bobby. That way Mary Jo Kopechne might still be alive today instead of being left to drown in that lushes Oldsmobile. As far as the Pats & the Red Sox go, I don't waste my time watching Pro sports anymore. Overpaid jocks. I'd rather watch a high school game. At least the kids play for the love of the game, not the almighty buck. Case in point Manny Ramirez & Pedro Martinez, when both of them went on strike and refused to play for the sox because according to them they weren't making enough money. Let them go back to the Dominican Republic and pick bananas for 2 bucks an hour.

Jim,
I've lived in TN most of my life with the exception of a couple of years on the road with the telephone Co. Most people seem to like it here. The tax situation is pretty good if you don't live in the large cities (Nashville, Knoxville, Memphis, Chattanooga). There is no state income tax and the property taxes are reasonable outside of the cities/counties I mentioned. There is a sales tax of 9.25%. I live near Nashville, but the area most retirees seem to favor is around Crossville and Cookeville. The summers there are milder and the winters generally moderate. One thing you should know, Yankees are those who come to visit, but go back home leaving some of their $$. Damn Yankees are the ones who come to stay :) You might keep this in mind.

Ya Rick I remember the Yankee/Damn Yankee thing from my Uncle. He moved from Mass to Louisiana to open up a hot shot business and he use to tell me they call him a damn Yankee. I was thinking around the Madisonville, Englewood Area.

Occosionally

One may find a few folks who consider us to be Northern Aggressors, STILL, which never ceases to amaze me.. The war ended in 1865 and nobody living today had anything to do with any of it. I lived in middle Georgia in 1963-64 and I found a good bit of intolerance then. Not so much any more though, the South has changed a lot since the 60's, from my experience anyway. I have always liked the differences between us. Some of my best friends are and were Southerners. If I could change where I was born, I would be pleased to have been born below the line.

If I were to be looking to move

I would find the most central location to the most active ranges that offer shoots I enjoy and move there. I find, at my time in life, traveling to shoots has become onerous. With decent motels costing well over $100. per night and food costs being over the moon, travel is no longer pleasurable for me. Decent motels on the West Coast of Florida are over $200. per night at this time of year and the middle class places over $100. Takes the fun out of it for me. Yeah, it's the nursing home's money but there is also the need to buy other things to make one's life a bit more enjoyable.

Choosing the most central location can be dicey too with ranges longevity being always dubious. When I think of all the ranges that have gone just during my time at this it's scary and always rumors of others about to go. Not an easy choice but we only have the present to deal with, eh?

Jim,
Madisonville/Englewood is a very good area as well. I'm not what you'd call familiar with it, but I get through there maybe once a year. If you like canoeing/rafting/trout fishing, it's very good. Close to a couple of major cities as well. Pete mentioned being near match locations. Should you choose to shoot some UBR, you're a couple of hours away from one or two. IBS matches are close to the same in GA and NC. Come on down and we'll teach you the accent.

That's one of the reasons for that area. As a member of the IBS, it seems like there are plenty of shoots in the NC, VA, KY, SC, GA area. Had a real good time shooting the States in Georgia in November of 2013. Ronnie Milford and that crew are real good people. You can TRY to teach me the accent Rick, but I'm still gonna pahk my CAAA and go getta BEEA, LOL!
