Picked up my new [second hand] 25/06 yesterday, Rifle is a Mark X mauser that appears to have been rebarreled. The barrel is a #3 profile with 6 narrow lands and grooves about twice as wide as the lands. There is not much to go on, but the barrel has a little horses head that looks a bit like a chess knight stamped on it and the caliber 25/06. A rather crude internal examination by yours truly with a jewelers magnifying glass seems to indicate that that the barrel is of good quality and most likely hammer forged, not unlike a Sako barrel. Has anyone come across one of these barrels as I am very curious as to it's origin.

To Bob

No tool chatter marks as I would expect to see in a button cut barrel, also the corners of the lands slightly rounded as opposed to sharp and square as maybe one might expect from a cut rifled barrel. What tool marks there are look more squished rather than cut, also narrow lands and wide grooves might indicate something. I am pretty ignorant about rifle barrels but I just got a general impression. If I am in error about this assessment please let me know so that I can do a better job next time.
