caliber choices

I presently have a 6BR with an 8 twist 28" Pacnor and it shoots the Sierra 107MK excellent, will not shoot the 105AMAX bullets, was hoping to get them to work for long range groundhogs, so I am down to ordering a new Savage LRPV rifle either in a 6BR with the 12 twist or the 22-250 with a 9 twist, which of these 2 calibers would be better for long range groundhogs, 800 yds plus and what bullet will make the flattest trip there, Like I mentioned earlier in the message, I was hoping to get the 105Amax to work with a 6BR 8 twist and it did not happen. right now I am shooting a Savage 223 with a 9 twist model 12bvss-s the load is the 75 AMAX shooting at 2955fps with EXTREME accuracy.so my question on the caliber choices would have to outperform the 223 75gr AMAX performance 2955 and the high BC combination.

thanks

Instead of switching guns, how about switching bullets? If there isn't a reason you must shoot the AMax - Try another bullet. If the guns shoots the 107s well then there will be more bullets it will shoot. Have you tried a little bit lighter VMax bullet?

Barrel twist rate

I purchased a new Stevens last summer to play with and plink, etc, etc. In the Savage brochure they list their .223 having a 1-9" twist rate. I measured the one I have and it is 1-10.5" ! Is it common to find random twist rates with Factory made rifles?

Yes....

Try the Berger 90gr Boat Tail .... Ought to be quite Salty...!
As well as the Berger 105 VLD at .532...

The V-Max 87gr may not be THE longrange pill... but out to 600yd PD's or Yotes...... Woooohooo WACK!

That 8 twist Pacnor should shoot those 105 AMax..... Kinda weird...

Any coppering..... ?

A-Max

When you say you 'can't get the A-Max to work', what do you mean"' Are they keyholing??.

I have a friend who has a 6BR in 1-8 twist and it shoots the big A-Max about as well as anything.

Get some CCI Benchrest Primers, a can of Reloader 15, load it to about 3000 fps, (perfectly doable with that 28 inch tube), and I bet it shoots.........jackie

Chet,
I'm guessing that you want to use the A-Max because it's the only bullet in that caliber and weight expected to expand in game. Not a varmint bullet but a light jacketed big game bullet.

My take is that ground hog shooting changes immensely going from 400 yards to 600 yards. You state the need for 800 yard or more puts you into another planet-- and a larger then 6mm caliber. None of the high BC 6mm bullets will expand in a ground hog a 800 yards. I like the 6BR and it's longer cousins, great for paper punching at 600 or more KNOWN yards and the paper target doesn't drag of into a hole if you miss the 'er spine. Think about using a significantly larger diameter bullet that will kill humanely without expansion. Even with a Swarovski Laser Guide bolted to my heavy rotating bench it tough to estimate distance and wind to make those long shots on a live target as small as a ground hog. Just don't want you to be disappointed with your 6mm, good luck.

Pete,
I have an old Savage 112V and the factory barrel that was supposed to be 1 in 14 turned out to be 1 in 15. Measured it several times as closely as I could, and it came out 1 in 15 ±~1/8" every time.

Jackie

No keyholing, just lousy groups, like 1 1/4" at 200yds
