Building My First Hybrid

I have had a windfall and I am going to use it to build my first Hybrid. The rifle is to be in 30 BR (Robinett, PTG). I will be shooting local club non sactioned matches 100-300 Yds. Some of our shooters shoot sanctioned matches in Reno, Phoenix, and Sacramento. The action will be Savage LRPV RB/RP. I shoot left handed and find this configuration very cormfortable. The stock will be SSS Dog Tracker. That was the easy part.

Now comes the hard part, the barrel. Schillen barrels are available, as are Krieger et al. Are the Kreiger et al barrels more barrel than the Savage action justify or support? Next problem is dummy rounds. It is said to do the chambering job properly one needs to make a couple of dummy rounds to send to the smith who is chambering the barrel. I will have to make brass and put the dummies together. They will not be FF and even with the proposed bullet how does one determine desired overall cartridge length? I will wait for replys before I ask any more questions and they are many.

Thank you.

Why dummy rounds . . . .

The smith should have - and use - a "GO" gauge - no brass required. Good shootin'! RG

I take it that the go nogo is available from PTG as is your reamer? IIRC your reamer from PTG is a no throat. Is this to be used as is or throated for the desired bullet?

Thx.

I don't know your club rules but you might want to have Fred @ Sharp Shooter install one of is 2 oz triggers(which he requires you send in the action to be trued before installing)do this before you start your build as truing will usually change the headspace/stub length etc if you decide to build without the nut,,,,,,,,,,,,,,

David:

I can see the learning curve here is a bit steep. That said, our club has very few rules for their matches. My Hybrid would shoot in what they call "Factory Varmint (Modified)". Within those rules one shoots what they brought. True bench guns shoot "Unlimited. I have been talking with a BR shooting friend of mine who had Fred true a Savage action for him. He was quite satisfied. It did however take a long wait to get it done.

I do however find your suggestion a good one. This would mean that I would end up with an extra 6 oz. Accutrigger. I have a pre Accutrigger 12BVSS Savage. Would the removed trigger fit it? It seems I will be involved in a long wait for a barrel. Is a trued LRPV action sufficent to carry a Krieger barrel or is that over kill? I find that there is a lot I need to know about 30 BR barrels before I order one. My greatest concern is that I will have a lot to learn about barrel maintenance, break in, desired bullets and other things. If I go to a Primo barrel like a Krieger I am afraid I might mess it up while learning.

krieger

get the krieger. you wom't mess it up/ just shorten your leARNING CURVE3

Jeffrey, most use the ZERO freebore "as is" for bullets based upon 1.00" jackets, and featuring 7-8 caliber ogives, up to 0.050" of freebore is ok - but even that much will limit your options.

Yes, simply get the "GO" gauge, along with your reamer - or, if your smith has a 6BR "GO" he can use that. The "NO GO" isn't required: the bolt should "just" close on the "GO". Good shootin'! RG

R.G. & Others:

Thank you for all of the information. I think I can now make an informed decision when ordering a barrel.

I have a 30BR on a Savage action and I just love it. I don't get to shoot it much but it does work well.

I have been talking to Robinett about this no nut barrel fit. I am going to have my smith fit a no nut barrel on one of my 12BVSS rifles. It will give a FF barrel and see how well the smith does. I will also have him make a stub for it. It should work out. If his work proves out I can get blanks and have them chambered quicker than waiting on Schilen. I have ordered all the stuff for the new rifle. Now I wait.

I look at the barrel nut as a plus on my Sav's.
I do not use a go gauge anymore. The nut allows me to set the headspace for the new unfired brass I intend to use with that barrel. (within reason)

After making sure my new brass has consistent headspace readings I'll adjust the headspace of the barrel to a slight crushfit. Seeing as the angle of the shoulder on the unfired brass and the chamber are not exactly the same its easy to get a nice crush fit as theres some give.

This negates that first firing stretch your brass must undergo which does nothing but weaken it. It helps keep case growth under control as the brass has not been weakened by that initial stretch.

It might not allow you to use factory ammo. That does'nt sound like a problem for you same as its not for me.

Other posters (alinwa) have a theory about case head squarness and crush fit upon fireforming being the only way to attain squarness. Thats above my pay grade I'm afraid. Maybe if he sees this post he'll chime in.

Two rules. You must make sure(IMO) that you retain some clearence between the bolt face and barrel stub. Quality brass should be headspaced close enough to allow this. I've seen cheapo brass headspaced so short I could not get a crush fit without the bolt head contacting the barrel. Never saw that with the good stuff.

Second rule is never increase headspace beyond saami spec. Theres usually plenty of gap between a Sav's bolthead and barrel stub. Increasing that is dangerous. Never a problem using factory brass. Not sure if Randys reamer is modified or by how much.

Unless you want to make a quick switch barrel why get rid of the nut. A shouldered barrel adds more weight I would think than the nut if thats a concern.

Your rig should be plenty accurate that a 2 oz. trigger would be an asset.

Jo191145:

Re rules one ad two above. I will be using headspace gauges from the manufacturer of the reamer FTG. This will maintain both proper headspace and bolt barrrel face relationship. The three advantages of a Savage (with the nut) fit barrel are: First the barrel can be made by someone without having access to the receiver. Second the barrel can be installed by a layman, not a gunsmith. Third it is a labor saving method of manufacture. All of this is well and good. I only shoot club (unsanctioned) matches. The class is "Modified Factory Varmint". You shoot what you bring. As far as a no nut (Remington) fit on the barrel, right now it is just an experiment. It also allows me to have much heavier barrels which are a benefit and I have no weight restriction. I can also spin the no nut barrel out and put a Savage barrel in at will. I will see If I like it. The thought down the line is this. It takes 12-16 weeks to get a Savage barrel out of Schilen. Krieger will not make a Savage fit barrel. I can get a barrel blank from a barrel maker of my choice and have it chambered, in a lot less time. If the smith that is chambering it has the action available he can make a no nut fit just as easy as a Savage fit. Barring a major crisis the barrel will stay with that action. If one has the tools changing either type of barrel takes about the same time. :)

Jeffreytooker,

I am considering the dog tracker stock also. Even though it is pillar bedded do you still have to bed the action with some kind of epoxy?

Shooters at our range has one with no extra work done on it. He shot 199 6X with it yesterday. Talk to the lady at Sharp Shooters Supply.
