Hi All,
My son & I will be building a long range .308 rifle this fall and I have a few questions.
the gun will be built from a Rem 700LA ultra mag. with a custom barrel. I'm thinking of going with an Ultra mag "match" chamber & 10 twist, 26" w/built-in brake.
Jewell trigger and 12-42x56 NF scope.
Norma Brass.
CCI primers.
Powder option????
Bullet options???

this is our first build, something I have wanted to do for some time. any pointers will be very helpful.

thanks

While that was not our intention, after thinking about it maybe we should build to those specs.
For the most part we both would like to learn to shoot 600 yards and out from there. We plan on taking the NRA’s long Range shoots class next year and would like to come back home from that trip and apply what we learn.
Building the gun is just a part of the learning process.

thanks for your input.

after looking at what "heavy gun class" is at the upper level I think not.
Just a gun we can take out to 1000 yards and still be 5"-10" groups

there is a 600/1000 yd forum, where i have picked up some info for future use.
you should do more research before building.
just having a big case does not make an accurate 1000 yd rifle.

Thats the reason i asked- i would think youd build a light gun first to compete in all classes and a large magnum is punishment in a light gun

Considering barrel life (why I did not pick a 6.5x284, I am building a 6.5x47 Lapua to shoot 600 yards and over. 1:8 Twist for the 130 grain class projectiles. I am also building a .308 on a Remington 700 SA, but that is going in a chassis and will only be used to 300 yards. 1:12 twist for the 155-167 projectiles. That one will have a mussel brake while the long range gun, built on a Borden action will not.

Bill,

IMO - you would be better served building a 300wsm or 7mm Remington short mag base on your doner action. Having built the 300wsm and others I have noticed a lot of good info from the 7mm and it would be my next build.

I also would look at the Tracker stock or the new F-class stock from McMillan. there are others but these stand out to me.

The scope is a good choice - but if you have not bought it yet you should look at the new Comp model they have.

You will also need to check out the front and back rest - can be costly.

Jerry Welcome to 1K - it is a lot of fun. ;)

the starting point is the action, 700 RUM that I have in hand. cartridge/chamber/bullet is YTBD.
still asking questions. I'm going to post q few questions on the 600/1000 yard group next.
thanks for the help

Might i suggest you go to a match, either 600 or preferable 1000, and see
how "practical" your goal is.

( I bought a used 6.5-284 for 600...not sure if i was a good choice,
but it is what i have now)

I think I should have asked my question this was.

This gun is not to compete with, just trying to get the best results from it at 600yards and out.

Seeing you have a magnum action I would build a 7 SAUM or 300 WSM.
They really shoot and are easier to tune. A 17 lb gun with a brake has a lot of recoil.
They are both really accurate and will take you to 1000 easily. You also could hunt with them.
A 6.5x47 would be a good choice but you have a Magnum boltface.
It would recoil less and be cheaper to shoot. 300 WSM's hold a lot of 1000
yard BR records. They shoot great and you use H4350 and 210 VLD's. Matt

Rem 700LA ultra mag Action. - Good may have to have it trued up.
Jewell trigger Get the lowest trigger pull for hunting then.
12-42x56 NF scope. Good choice
Norma Brass. OK but so is the remingtion for the RSUM
CCI primers. OK - I would consider Fed Match 210's
Powder option???? H4350, RL17, RL19, H4831, IMR7828
Bullet options??? Burger 210, JLK 210's Burger 215's Cart 209's...

Bill - the Ulta mag action give you the opportunity to seat the match bullets at the correct length using the WSM or RSUM cases....

thanks guys, just the info I was looking for.
