i have a 22 br made up in early 80s
my ? is I would like to use the lapua brass in it but case is larger in the base then the Remington I bought then.can I take the full length size die and push the case down o where itwill function in my gun with no problems?i am sure it can be done .I do not want to rechamber itfor cost reasons .

Another thing you have to watch for is case length. Current 6BR's are 1.560. 22BR's are 1.520. Make sure your brass is trimmed to the right length. You'd be wise to make sure of your chamber dimensions before anything else. I'm curious, do you know who chambered that barrel?

the rifle was chambered by shilen rifles.the rifle is a 1977 all shilen rifle.it has a dga action 25 inch barrel and a thumb hole fiberglass stock all in h v set up.it was a 222 but I had him rechamber it in early 1980s.

I have read that the lapua brass is larger in the web area.is this true and can I size this down to fit my early 1980s chamber that was set up for the Remington case?

I was thinking of a redding small base die.

I measured a few new, right out of the box, 6BR lapua cases. I'm getting .469 to .4695. Measure a few of your fired cases. If they are larger, then they should work. If not, call Redding and ask what the diameter of the small base die is, and that should tell you. A standard die may work depending on what your chamber diameter you have. No one can give you an answer without knowing what size your chamber is 1st.
 
You are talking about quite a bit of sizing. It won't work very well.
Shooters who have tried this in the past end up with sticking cases.

Why not remove the barrel, and rent a modern 6BR reamer. If you are careful, you can ream it out by hand with the barrel secured, and using a "T" handle on the reamer. I know it can be done, because I have done it.
