For someone that is wanting to start shooting competitively what equipment will you need besides the rifle, and of course ammunition. Not just what equipment, but what to look for when choosing it? I've been considering shooting in some matches for years, and never just worked it out to do it. I have my own range, build my own rifles, but usually just shoot with friends. I've got some equipment, but I know that it would not be what I really need to be competitive. I've already decided to build a BR rifle as soon as I can accumulate the parts I need. Probably chambered in either 6ppc or 6br. So what else do I need so that I will be prepared? Thanks. ~Jackson

What kind of Benchrest?

You might need different equipment for the different disciplines. The easiest way to find out is to , 1. Find a shooter close to you and go look at their equipment or 2. Go to a match and look at the array of equipment there, ask plenty of questions and decide after that.

For a new shooter at Riverbend all you need is some sort of rifle and plenty of ammo. We will arrange a loaner 36x scope, a front rest and a rear bag. You don't need windflags as there will be plenty to watch.

Dont buy anything until you get with the locals who are shooting what you will want to shoot. I am new and have found this to be so true.Seems like everything i bought before i found out what they shoot locally was the wrong thing( rest bag ect ect).So now i ask the guys who have been into it for a while and they have gone through all the no good stuff and have good advice. My 2cents.

Jackson...what you need is a rifle and ammo. To start with anyway.....

The problem is not what you need - it's what your gonna want.
You will want a new front rest ...actually probably two or three. A rear bag - probably two. One of every loading gadget known to man - and two of every gadget that you actually ever use.
Several extra barrels (because there is no way you lost that last match if the one you had was any good). Enough Scopes that you could do comparison test for Consumer Reports on the weekends. Six or Seven tool boxes - half of these will remain empty and never used. Shooting glasses in every color under the rainbow. A plastic bag full of countdown timers - 1/2 of them still working. A half-box of every 68 g bullet ever produced. A bottle of every brand of copper remover - even some that you made yourself from a mixture of rat poison/windex/and 1981 Jordan Alexander Cabernet.

Heck you probably will want one of those "Billy Mays" steam cleaners he is selling on TV because I am sure they can be used to clean and anneal brass at the same time.

Like Ray said - to start with bring a rifle and ammo - or you're gonna buy something (in addition to the list above) that you don't need or want.

Before you buy or build a rifle you need to know whether you will be shooting short range BR (100-300 yds) or long range BR (600-1000 yds) because the barrels will have a different twist rate, which you probably already know.:)
