Beginner Advice- Scopes

I'm a true beginner in the area of scoped rifles....for use in benchrest shooting up to 600 yds. Would like to stick to a variable range scope. What is a reasonable magnification for this type of use. I will be shooting a Sauer SSG3000 in .308. I have been looking at Leupold and NightForce that have 25x, 32x, and 42x magnifications.
Any advice appreciated.
