Be very careful with these factory Burris scope covers.

Just an advisory/warning about these really poorly designed scope covers that can damage your new Burris scope lenses;

These are skimpy little plastic discs that are held very tightly in place by a long black rubber elastic band. You have to really stretch that rubber band and hold the disc firmly by its narrow edge with your fingertip as you put tension on each side and try to center the caps over the lens. I felt like I was pulling on a sling shot!

Sure enough, when I tried to use these things in haste at the firing range, on two seperate occasions the small cover slipped out of my fingers, and the edge of it wacked the lens! I now have small scuff marks on the eye-piece of a brand new Black Diamond 6x-32X scope.

I have permanently retired these "disc" covers. I don't know why Burris couldn't provide the more typical slip-on plastic bikini cups with an elastic string like most other manufacturers. Anyway, just a precautionary note to you.

scope covers

Van: yes, I agree, they are a $1.95 piece of crap. Just another reason Leupold remains my number one scope selection: really like the screw-on lens caps on the 2004 and newer models. My old Unertls, made in the 1950s have screw-on lens caps, and even my Weaver T-24s came with them. Also never liked the "mushy" click adjustments on the Burris scopes. Sold or traded them all, except for one.

So far I'm not impressed with the hard to turn magnification ring, and the side focus knob which comes up just slightly short of sharp focus at 50 yards. Neither was I happy about two small ugly nicks on the SF knob straight from the factory.

On the positive side; I'll say that the clicks on this 8-32X Black Diamond ARE very defined, the reticle adjustment and the image very clear at 100 yards, and the scope holds a firm zero. (so far) The scope is also as bright as my Bushnell elite 4200's. (That's bright!) So, I feel I'm getting my money's worth for a scope that sells for only about $700, and I bought for less on Ebay

But the fact that the lens caps are retarded, and the cloth stretchy style dust cover (that they also included in the box) does NOT fit over this long scope without a struggle, really makes me wonder if and what other poor designing/engineering the Burris folks might have put into the scope itself.

Out of couriosity did you have the factory sunshade on ? I noticed on my first Signature series that with the factory sunshade on the Bikini cover was way to tight. That continues with all the BLK. Dia. series as well. with the sunshade removed there has never been a problem. BTW NEVER store the scope with the Bikini cover on it will smash the rubber eye cup of the ocular end (you'll then have to send it back to Burris for replacement). Aftermarket covers are the way to go IMHO.

Heavens no.

Sheeesh....I'd probably have to pull back on the elastic band with my 2 feet to get it stretched over the sunshade. If that slipped, it would be more like drawing on an 80lb crossbow and launching the scope on its way to the target.

That's very unlucky. Hard to imagine damaging a lens with that cover. I've been using Burris scopes since about '92 and have maybe 15 or so of them.....never had a problem with those lens covers. Not my favorite design but they work ok.

Some years back during a talk with someone at Leupold, I asked....."considering what Leupolds cost, why aren't they supplied with a lens cover?" The bs answer was "because not everyone would like whatever they sent." So if they now come with a lens cover, it's about time.

I was able to keep wiping away at the scuff marks with a soft tissue so that only a little bit of the marks remains on the lens. So while I doubt that any real "damage" has occured, the idea of having to grasp the thin coin-like edge of each disc with your fingertips, and release it carefully centered over the lens while you are pulling back on that stout black rubber band is just plum stupid.

I didn't take rocket science for me to design a bikini lens cover that can easily slip over each end of the scope without cross bow tension, or being able to fip around and hit the lens. You'd think if I can make something that works much more manageable out of an empty Tylenol bottle, and and an old vitamin container, then the folks at Burris should be able to do better with their resources available to them.

Well, Don Burris has passed on, and...........

whomever has taken over is obviously "maximizing profits". Those covers are probably made in the Phillippines w/some of ol' Don's scopes; and if you don't work for the military in PI, you don't get much time to test hop a scoped rig!!
