BAT SV action

I'm thinking about buying a SV action (6.5"), 308 bf, RBLPRE and putting it on a MBR type stock. The barrel will be a 28" HV taper. Do ya think I should maybe consider a longer action such as an SB (1" longer) for that length and weight barrel?

If I am not mistaken the SV's are 1.365 in diameter and like you said 6.5 inches long. They were designed for a LV rifle. That is: a short LV barrel @21 inches. I have seen some longrange rigs with these small actions. HV barrels @28 inches. Larry Isenhour has one and shoots IBS 600 yards and does very well with it. If you already have a SV, I would not hesitate to use it, But if I were ordering one from BAT, I would get a 1.55 diameter round SB model. I have one and love the short throw 6.5 inch bolt, plus you have extra bedding surface and weight to offset the heavy barrel. Just my .02 cents.

This is a great question. I am in the exact same boat. I am going to focus my attention on point blank this year but we do have a varmint shoot down the road i like to attend. I am going to try and set up a 500 yard egg shoot sometime this summer as well. This subject is perfect for my situation. I have the cash now to build a 600 yard rifle. I also Have a nice used BAT SV action with a 308 bolt. right bolt left port. I was thinking about a 10 twist 6br or a dasher. not sure which at this point. I would like to have a straight 1.250 contour barrel as well. I just dont know if that barrel would be way to heavy for my little action. I may have to settle for a HV contour. I want to sit all this in a tooley MBR stock, unless some one suggest something different. I dont mean to butt in on the original poster, so please excuse me. I just hope we can get some replies to this subject. I liked what sam had to say, Sam is a wonderful 600 yard shooter, so it is assumed he knows whats what. I just dont know if i should sell my little bat SV and buy something bigger? If i do sell it, i was thinking along the lines of a stiller benchrest action. Not sure what one though. The drop port looks really interesting. thanks Lee

BAT says it would be fine.

I e-mailed BAT with that same question before I ordered my SV for a Dasher LG. They said it would be fine to use my HV contour at 28" with a standard pillar bedding. I still built a glue-in barrel block to hang it because it is much easier to do the bedding on a block. I love this little action and plan on getting another to do a HG Dasher. Hope this helps some.
