BAT action truing?

Hi guys, have two new BAT actions (M & MB) and was going to use my local gunsmith to puth the two rifles together (6BR & 7RSAUM). My gunsmith is very compitent with rem700 actions but has never put together a rifle using a BAT. His question to me was:
"is the action perfect out of the box, or do I need to do some truing/squaring,thread chasing, etc.?"
I didn't know how to answer (other than I hope not & I don't think so).
Would anyone out there like to comment on whether you do anything to a new BAT action?

Thanks for your time.

I would seriously doubt any truing of the action is required. I may even consider a gunsmith with more experience with custom actions.

If you had just taken delivery of a new Mercedes would you take it down to Goober's garage and say, "Pull the engine and blueprint it." Didn't think so.

Has your gunsmith ever built a benchrest rifle using a new custom action? If not, I would be very hesitant to let him touch my two new BAT actions. It greatly concerns me that he would even ask about the need to true up or do anything to a new BAT action.

Get some references before you go ahead with this. There are benchrest gunsmiths with records and references to back them up but sadly, there are plenty of wannabes.

You guys are probably right. I shoot with some great gunsmiths here is CO.
I guess I should use them.
Thanks for the replies.

Two BATS?! No one needs two BATS! I'll take the M off your hands. he..he..J/K

I guess the 7rsaum is going in the M? Just courious because I'm building one on a 3LL but I gots to wait for it. How does a loaded round fit with your eject port length? ( 3.4" I think on an M?) Plenty of room to take an unfired cartridge out?

Thanks and good luck with your new guns.

Wayne Campbell is a top BAT gunsmith. He has reworked many of the top 100/200 shooters BATS, especially the firing mechanism.

I had one that had the bolt face out of square. Shot good though!! Still shot good after it was fixed!!!??? Lee

Jerry,

The BAT gunsmith is the man who taught Wayne....in my opinion. I won't argue the point that I would be a little weary of a gunsmith who hasn't barrelled a custom action.

However, a real gunsmith isn't a gunsmith if he doesn't check the action out. I've had more than one custom action that had to have the face of the action or bolt trued up, ignition system worked over, or trigger timing adjusted. And that goes for BAT's also.

The biggest problem is most people don't want to pay a gunsmith to check an action, especially after they pay to have one gone over and nothing was found wrong. I have every action gone over and I don't care what his bill is. One time, I bought a used gun that shot ok but just wasn't up to snuff. Pulled the action because I was going to restock and sent the action to the gunsmith. After a call from the gunsmith, the action has never been used. Action body was all out of wack and the ignition system was so bad that he said it was going to be about impossible to fix. It was then that I realized that he had probably saved me a few years of frustations and a few thousand in barrels on a turd of a action.

It seems that when one spends the amount of money that it takes to purchase a custom action...that it would be right but that is just not the fact.

Kev, ask Wayne about this issue.

salhertoo, it is snug, though I must tell that the 7RSAUM is a slight wildcat with a total loaded round OAL of 3.194" with a berger 180vld.

Skeetlee, how did you figure out the bolt face was out of square?

I have at least 8 BAT actions on various guns and have yet to have one that needed to be "trued". Not only that, the tolerances between each other (same model) are incredibly close.

Shiraz, good to see you chimed in. I have been out with one of your teamates lately. I am excited about getting into longrange.
Are you going to Pheonix?

Yes, I'll be there for one day next week for the tryout and flying right back. Cannot stay for the Phoenix matches as I have too much going on.

Long range shooting can be very addictive!

It seems a little strange that for an action that is good to go right out of the box, there are several notable Gunsmiths making a pretty good dollar "fixing" them.

If you do not know there is a problem, then you are free to continue in ignorant bliss. (please note, I do not use the word ignorant as anything derogatory). But, if you have the means at hand to ascertain that there is a problem, you will not sleep at nights untill you correct it. ........jackie

Jackie, we need to be a little careful on BAT models. My 10-inch, with that long, long bolt, has a pretty hefty striker. I don't hear of anyone modifying them . . .

I'm a little less sure about the 8-inch (is that an "M"?) -- three of my four BATS predate the CNC days, so might not directly compare.

I have an action here that i knew wasnt quite right as after every time i fired it it felt like i was shooting a hot load as the bolt lift was a little stiff and resistant. The rifle shot ok so i just lived with it mainly because i had no idea what was wrong. I was talking with Tom M one afternoon and i was telling him about this problem i was having and he made a phone call for me to Dwight scott. Dwight knew exactly what was wrong with my action before he even put his hands on it. The rest is history problem solved! Rifle still shoots Ok not better not worse. The bolt lift is better though. I do often wonder just how true an action needs to be. I guess the real answer is, that it needs to be true!!
