Anyone shooting Hart barrel in rimfire benchrest? Anyone know when Shilen, Muller, Benchmark, Douglas available to order? Are there any other barrels being used in benchrest rimfire that are available? What would be best twist for 100yds?

I've had a couple

They can be great. The one I shoot has shot several 23X, and one 24X card outdoors on one of the tougher ranges around.
All can be good, nobody shoots a Douglas that doesn’t get lapped, most are 16 twist and there is no sanctioned 100 yard BR, it is primarily a 50yd/mtr game.

a good barrel is a good barrel

Two local shooters have received Krieger barrels in short order. But Krieger barrels are not taper lapped. (it matters)
My Krieger shot a 24X card but never again
Shilen recently fulfilled a LARGE order so hopefully they will start to again supply rimfire barrels. The octagon barrels are winning.
Muller will be ramping up production. Catching up with back orders. Call Paul Tolvastad 920-204-9527. Muller has done darn well recently.
I have shot a couple outdoor 250 18x with my Hart barrel. So it has potential. Need to test ammo. (Out of the 250 ammo)

Taper lapping is needed for buttoned barrels, not for cut barrels

Whhhaaatttttt????

Well.....you tell me.I know you’’ve redone a couple with taper but There seem to be cut bbl’s out there doing pretty good lapped, not taper lapped.
So I guess maybe IMHO it would be not necessarily.

I have taper lapped many cut barrels. I have lapped quite a few after someone already chambered and shot them. Without exception they all shot better. I don't really know about the ones I lapped from the start, but I will not ever put a barrel of any kind on a rifle that does not have some taper in the bore.

Any helpful hints on barrel lapping. What grit? Does this also apply to centerfire?

Thanks for any help.

Hal,

I do not know what you plan to do with this information but I assure you barrel lapping is not something you get into on a lark.

It is more art than science and very few will actually be able to improve their barrels.

With that said, if you are serious about getting into lapping you could ask Paul Tolvstad.

I don't know what he may be willing to share, but he is the best on the planet.

Thanks for the pictures, they say a lot.
I have a couple of barrels I would like to try it on. One I picked up a gun show, cheap, and you can feel several loose spots when you run a tight patch down it.
Another factory barrel would only shoot 3-4" at 100 yds. It was loose the last 2-3" at the muzzle.

I"ll search and see if I can find anything that Paul might have written on lapping.

Not really. It's hard to put into words exactly how to do it. Different barrels require different methods and doing anything after chambering is very touchy. Usually around 180 grit is what most barrel makers use. I truly think it applies to centerfire. I seriously doubt Paul will have much to say any different than the above. Calfee has written stuff about it and that is probably available somewhere. I think TKH has/is doing some. Maybe he can put it into words better. Good luck on anything you try.
