barrel cooler experiment

So, I had another brainstorm today driving in from work....... "howsabout cooling a gun barrel off a CO2 bottle??"

I got kids with paintball stuff.

I got a great big ol' "CO2 fill station" set up with a tank that'll fill hunnerds of airguns and paintball guns.....

I got 20oz CO2 tanks lined up.......

So when I got home I set a bottle on the seat beside me, cracked the valve until I got a nice gentle flow of cool CO2 flowing and headed into town for some supplies. I stopped by the shop for couple minutes on the way out the driveway, got back in the rig and started out....... didn't make it to the end of the driveway

:)

BUSTED!!

Instead of 20-30-40 minutes of cool flow I got....... 4-5 minutes?? Maybe.

So, another idea'r that DIDN'T WORK. Might help somebody, somewhere's.......

Did it run out or freeze up. I remember from lonnggg ago buying an attachment for a CO2 cylinder that would let you make dry ice. Yep, out of a large cylinder got maybe a small cool whip bowl full of dry ice fluff.

just ran out. MUCH quicker than I expected.

Yeahh, I can crack the valve on the biggie tank and blow dry ice all over the garage, but I just adjusted to a gentle, maybe 50* temperature flow and it didn't last long.

Regulator for 20oz CO2 paintball tank

I have the one listed at the link below. It came as a kit when I purchased it several years ago. It works great for spilled powder in the rifle chamber, with the adjustable pressure feature. A quick blast and you're good to go. I've never used it to cool barrels. It will probably work with the right attachment that fits the rifle chamber.

Will it not introduce moisture in the barrel?

Only from cooling it and condensation.
The contents of the tank have no water content.

You need about a 40 cubic foot tank.
Around 24 inches tall.
Pit it on a hand truck with some bungee cords.
They can be moved around by hand and if you can find an aluminum tanks it saves a lot of weight.

CO2 works well since it has a higher molar mass than Nitrogen and other common gases.

I have a setup for working up loads that uses CO2, a plastic 'chamber protector' and some nylon tubing.
It works better with no regulator to waste gas expansion cooling.
CO2 is under 1,000 PSI in the tank anyway.

Barrel cooling

I use a 10lb aluminum CO2 tank and a Norlin Enterprises attachment, with a regulator. Been using it for twenty years. Never noticed an issue with moisture in the barrel. I have noticed condensation on the outside of the barrel, usually when the PSI is a little too high. I do make it a habit to patch out the barrel, after using CO2 or a plain water doo hicky that I sometimes use.

Just an FYI.
When you fill the smaller tanks you are NOT loading them with quasi-liquid CO2 but just gas.

It is possible to move liquid but requires inverting the source tank or a tank with a dip tube and is more complicated.

Glenn and Brickeyee......

:)

I hear ya...... I just don't want to carry a big tank and I guessed the 20oz bottle would work longer than it did.

It was an easy test, cost me maybe 50 cents. But you guys have put it into perspective...

BTW I do own the dip-tube tank and can freeze the bottles etc...... and I WOULD probably try it.

If I'd gotten more than 5min out of that first bottle!

LOL

It is all about the mass you can get into the tank.

Just using gas is a very small amount.
