Bag Gun Barrel Block Rule

I've searched the NBRSA rule book and past meeting minutes and don't see the rule about limitations on barrel block size for the varmint class rifles. Has this rule been removed or am I just overlooking it? Can any length of barrel block be used?

FYI - The IBS rulebook still states "The barrel may be attached to the receiver, bedding blocks or sleeve or combination thereof for a distance of no more than four(4) inches, measured from the face of the bolt."

Some time back, I asked the same thing. Based on that thread I would say that it was taken out. I forget the year.

Scott Hunter, director of the Gulf Coast region and John Horn are going through the minutes, previous rule books and the current rule book to try to make sure that everything is in the rule book that is supposed to be. They aren't trying to rewrite the book, just make sure it's been updated correctly and nothing left out. As far as I know, how long the length of a barrel block in front of the bolt face can be has never been officially removed from the rule book. If it's no longer in the current NBRSA book, then it's because it was left out unintentionally as I don't remember that ever being brought up for a director's meeting or for a membership vote. I didn't find reference to it on the online version and my current rule book is in my loading box. I don't see any reason why it would have been brought up for a vote as that hasn't been an issue as there haven't been many rifles shot in the past 30 years with barrel blocks in the varmint classes. There have been a few lately though with Bob Scoville making his stock available with a barrel block system and probably others as well. It may well have been taken out, but I don't remember it being removed. At one time a sleeved action could only extend so far in front of the bolt face. But, sleeved actions have just about been obsolete for as long as I've been shooting benchrest even though that's what I used when I started. It didn't take Panda's and Hall's long to make the sleeved Remington's fade from the scene.

After I wrote my first post on this thread, I mentioned this to Dennis Thornbury (NBRSA president), and he told me about the review of rule books and minutes. I think that it is a very good thing. When I asked here before about the missing barrel block rule, I remember thinking that despite what I was told, that I did not remember any discussion of the topic, and an old book that I had, had the same rule that the IBS rules still have. Years back, when I was the president of a local club, the bylaws were retyped by the secretary, and I was the only one on the board that noticed a rather substantial section had been left out. I had an old copy, and had done more reading of the bylaws than anyone else had. No one studies that sort of thing much, unless he has a specific need to do so.

Recently I looked over the short and long range rules from the IBS and NBRSA about what is allowed in a sand bag. ( A friend had a question.) There were some interesting inconsistencies, not that anyone pays much attention to those parts of the rule books.
