Let me begin this report by starting with a story. When Gary Ocock and I were hosted by Tom Libby at the Pomona drags a few weeks ago, Ashley Force became very enamored with Gary. She picked him out of a huge crowd and followed his every move. When I inquired why the young Ms. Force would be so smitten with the elderly Mr. Ocock, Tom explained that it wasn't be cause Gary is one of the best BR competitors on the planet, a world record holder and member of the Hall of Fame; Libby said Gary simply "OOZES" an irresistible animal magnetism. From that moment Tom and I have nick-named Gary "The Oozer". Therefore, all references to Mr. Ocock in this report will use the moniker "The Oozer".
We had a very nice turnout to our annual AZ UL 5 shot match. We were just short of 40 shooters - most with rails; however, there were more than a couple of bag guns in use. Weather Saturday and Sunday was cold for us desert dwellers (39° for the 1st morning group and getting to high of 60° around 2PM then getting colder as the afternoon waned). Winds were calm to slight on Saturday. Sunday saw more switchy conditions in both direction and velocity.
If shooting 5 shot UL isn't fun enough, The Oozer added "The Ocock Championship" during lunch on Saturday and Sunday. It was 5 shots on the record (no sighters) in 3 minutes - Saturday 100 & Sunday 200. It was also two categories, the regular folks against the range helpers. Joe Stanovich was the champion.
Cutting to the chase, it was The Oozer show for most of the weekend. As has been the case for the past year, Gary was dominating with his rail. It was not a cake walk for The Oozer - there were plenty of folks shooting well. For example, on Saturday morning 11 shooters had teen aggs. Saturday afternoon saw 9 teen aggs posted.
Full match results are posted below. Of special note is how The Oozer won this year's California/Arizona Combined UL Championship. Gary shot an amazing four agg average of 0.1597 This broke the previous CA/AZ UL Combined record - a 0.1717 shot by Danny Moscaritolo in 2001.
Below are some photos from the match.
Come join us at Ben Avery on January 2nd & 3rd for the first two stages of the Arizona championships. We will be shooting UL and Sporter. Get your year started right.
On a personal note, much thanks to Lou Murdica and Walt Berger for lending me equipment so I could shoot a rail this weekend. It was a barrel of fun and I'm hooked.
