December 4th and 5th we held the annual 5-shot Unlimited matches, which also completed the 2010 5-shot Unlimited Arizona/California Combined Championships. This is one of the most popular competitions we hold each year at Ben Avery and usually attracts a good group of talented shooters. This year was no exception as 36 intrepid souls traveled from various locals to participate. Conditions were excellent – chamber of commerce weather. Daily temperatures would peak at a balmy 75°. Winds ranged from 0-10 mph with a light mirage and slight changes in direction. As Gary Ocock said, it was as close to “lollypop” range conditions as we get at Ben Avery. The air was filled with talk of record groups – silly boys ;)

Saturday we shot UL5-100 #1 in the morning. Winning the aggregate with a .1464 was Paul Garin. Paul is a relatively new shooter from California and has been mentored by Gary Sinclair and Joe Stanovich. Despite this extreme handicap and the fact that this was his first UL competition with his brand new railgun; Paul acquitted himself very well. Second place went to Kent “Superman” Webster with a tidy .1554 – also a new shooter with a new railgun. Superman calmly shot is first zero in competition and added 4 ones to finish his first UL agg in style. Third place, with a .1686, went to Lawrence Weisdorn. Small group for UL5-100 #1 was shot by Paul Garin with a .088 in match #1. Don’t these new guys know how hard this sport is?

After a short lunch, we shot UL5-100 #2. Winning the UL5-100 #2 aggregate with a .1819 was Gary (The Oozer) Ocock. Second place went to Lester Bruno with a .1974 and John Verhagen shot a .2076 to finish third. Small group for UL5-100 #2 went to John Verhagen with a .166 in match #3.

Sunday we started with UL5-200 #1. Winning the aggregate with a .1518 was Lester Bruno. In second place was Todd Tyler with a .1686. The Clown Prince of Benchrest (Tom Libby III) took third place with a .1784. Small group for UL5-200 #1 was shot by Doc Marsh with a .091 in match #5.

After a short luncheon recess, we shot UL5-200 #2. Joe Stanovich bested the 30+ other shooters and won the yardage with a very nice .1456. Randy Burgess took 2nd with a .1636 and Ed Maxwell came in 3rd with a .1642. Lawrence Weisdorn shot the small group for UL5-200 #2 with a .210 in match #3.

The 5-Shot Unlimited Grand #1 Winner is Gary Ocock. Gary shot a methodical .1788 to win the grand. Lester Bruno was 2nd with a .1953 and John Verhagen shot a .2027 to take 3rd.

The 5-Shot Unlimited Grand #2 Winner is Lawrence Weisdorn. Messrs. Weisdorn bested the other shooters with a .1781. Todd Tyler took 2nd with a .1887 and Gene DeLoney was 3rd with a .1921.

THE 5-SHOT UNLIMITED COMBINED #1 & #2 GRAND WINNER IS Lester Bruno. Lester shot a .1989 to take first. Lawrence Weisdorn was 2nd with a .2028 and Paul Garin finished third with a .2047.

THE 2010 ARIZONA/CALIFORNIA COMBINED 5-SHOT UNLIMITED CHAMPION IS GARY OCOCK. Gary shot a .1877 to take the Championship. Lawrence Weisdorn was 2nd with a .1901 and Marty Childers finished third with a .1941. Marty is also shooting a railgun for the first time this year and has done very well. This is the 5th time Gary Ocock has won this championship. It would be an extreme understatement to say Gary has enjoyed some success shooting his railgun.

The full match results are attached. Below is a photo of the winners;

Lester Bruno, Gary Ocock & Lawrence Weisdorn.

Thanks Jeff,

You did a great job on the report, even though you your ankle, knee and shoulder kept you form attending the match, I think you need to come up with a better excuse for us to believe your story that you were tracking a mountain lion and it jumped out of the bushes at you and you rolled down a hill were a coyote dragged you to your car so you could get to the hospital.

Gary (Oozer’s) Best half took off for a week on a boat Cruz so he had a bunch of shooters over to his house for a get together. It was a tree drink minim or streak once around the room. It was a good time by all telling how you lost a shot, I thought it was a fly, I thought this was a Cowboy Shoot; you know how hard it is to Holster a Rail Gun?

Tom

Thanks Jeff I knew you would come thru

How are you? Can you explain to us what happened?

Marty
To make a long story short; I fell in a canyon while tracking a mountain lion with my oldest son. I bounced like a sack of turds and broke my right leg/ankle, tore the meniscus in my left knee, and tore the rotator cuff in my left shoulder. Otherwise, we had a great time

I'm mending well and will be shooting again soon.

Jeff

I knew it had to be something good in order for you to miss a match.

Hope you mend well my friend, and we will see you soon. Don't listen to Libby he is jealous cause he couldn't track a roach in the kitchen without getting lost!
