As promised here is a report on the final two legs of the Arizona Benchrest Championships. Many thanks to Gary Ocock and his crew for another competitive and enjoyable match.
The conditions were typical for Ben Avery at this time of year. Temps were very pleasant ranging from mid 50's in the mornings and to the upper 70's in the afternoon. Humidity went from 45% in the morning to 15% in the afternoon. The winds were 4 to 6 mph in the morning and quickly changed to 10 to 12 mph around noon - including gusts to 20 mph. While the morning conditions appeared honest, they would bite you without notice. In the afternoon higher velocity and switchy conditions were the rule. We even had a delay in the action Sunday afternoon when a "dust devil" crossed through the loading area, shooting benches, range and target area. Mayhem ensued as targets, flags, towels, and other items not tied down went sailing.
The winners were Carolyn Libby LV-100; Bob Hammack LV-200; Jim Erickson LV Grand; Gary Ocock HV-100; Lester Bruno HV-200; Jim Erickson HV Grand; Jim Erickson 2-Gun; Lester Bruno 3 & 4 Gun. Complete match results are attached at the bottom of this post.
Here are some photos from the weekend.
New shooter Kent Webster getting ready for his effort in the "Ocock Trophy" egg shoot. Kent shot at Ben Avery for the first time over the weekend. Having never shot in formal competition before, Kent did a fine job. Everyone joined in to help Kent with the first match jitters. Half of us told him he had the right stuff and half told him he had the wrong stuff. Kent finally shot with a combination of bag squeezing, free recoil, pinning, heads-up and any other gun handling manners we could suggest
The morning line up of silent rifles before the action begins.
Looking down the range from Gary Ocock's bench.
Don Nielson performing cleaning duties between matches.
New shooter Kent Webster and Joe Pipola reloading between matches.
After a long weekend of shooting, Tom DeBacco, Doc Marsh (back to camera), Dan Sutton, Bob Brackney and Bob Hammack relax with a cold beverage before the awards are announced.
As The Oozer prepares for the awards ceremony, it appears Lester Bruno has already achieved a level of satisfaction.
The winners group photo - from left to right. Doc Marsh, Kent Webster (new shooter), Dan Sutton, Lester Bruno, Randy Burgess, Jim Erickson, Bob Hammack, Gary Ocock, Carolyn Libby, Bob Brackney and Jeff "Fat Boy" Welker.
Carolyn Libby posing with all the wood she won over the weekend. Carolyn's shooting has been limited during the past year. Obviously her absence did not hurt her shooting. She had no problem giving most of the boys a good thrashing. Way to go Carolyn
