AR30 in .338 Lapua

I am considering purchasing a .338 lapua. I like the looks of the AR30 by Armalite. I seem to remember the original rifles had Walther barrels and the newer ones use Shilen. I would appreciate any useful info on these rifles as to whether I would be happy with these as compared to a custom rig. I realize the factory rifle probably won't be quite as accurate as a full blown custom, but the price difference would buy a lot of reloading suppies. If the difference is .25 versus .30 MOA I Probably will go the factory route. I have only read a few reviews which are all several years old. I suspect most reviews in the usual gun rags because the writers are motivated by the editors to write glowing reports on the rifles they test to secure advertising accounts. Anyone have experiance with these loud noise makers? Also load data would be appreciated.
Take care and Merry Christmas!

imo

Was thinking the same thing a year ago you mite look into the 338rum close to the same MV and alot less cost and depends on who you ask it could be more accurate and can be built on off the shelf action.

Lotsa luck with any AR that doesn't shoot a 5.56 or a 6.8 SPC, or maybe a 6.5 Grndel. Even on websights like AR15 that deal almost exclusively with the AR15 platform, input is rare for even the more common .260, 243, 50 Beowolf or 300 Whisper and you feel very alone when buying any of these calibers.

I'm the careful kind of shopper/buyer who will not spend this kind of money without first learning something about the gun.....especially whether or not it is at least reliable and half accurate. If a semi-auto isn't going to function properly, why bother buying it.

VaniB-The AR 30 is not a gas gun!!!! It is a bolt action!!!!

Ar-30

Don, I have seen one AR-30, if I remember it was chambered in 300 Win Mag. In my opinion, this thing is pretty close to a Custom. I would suppose that Armalite uses the latest in CNC equipment in the manufacture of these.

Besides, this action is designed to handle cartridges of the size you want. I think it would be a good choice.......jackie

Ooops!.... Boy....don't I feel silly and want to go hide in a closet somewhere. Whenever I had past heard mention of this rifle, I had mistakenly assumed it was a semi-auto because of the Armalite name in it. I'm glad I found this thread and got that straigtened out.

I just now did some googling and checking into it through the link below. Very impressive indeed! I've always been partial to specialized stuff that is laser accurate. Military origins makes it that much more cool. :)

I have no experience with the 30 But I have shot the AR50 some (400ish rounds) The brake is louder that most if not all BUT it works better than anything else I had shot in 50bmg as far as reducing the recoil I had shot mostly the 705 ball ammo and it was nothing to write home about I was given some well made 800gn vlds to try and this was a huge difference in the accuracy after the 300 yd mark I didn't shoot for score at the 1000 yd line with the gun but did keep every shot in the string inside of 11" with the ball ammo never shot the vld's at that distance
I'm looking at this and some others in that caliber I'm undecided if I want to get serious or just continue playing the way I have been with smaller calibers
