AR-15 Gunsmith Recommendations Needed

I would like to get locate a gunsmith that:
1.) Understands concentricity / benchrest gunsmithing concepts.
2.) Understands the subtleties of the AR-15 platform.

Any recommendations?

I didn't know anybody but John Holliger of White Oak Armament could build one. Look at both his shooting record and what his rifles have done. I had him build one that Kavanaugh shoots and it is superb.

How about Frank White, Compass Lake Engineering, Alford, Florida, 32420, (850) 579-1208 (compasslake.com)?

I know of no good AR-15 smiths...

....but just like in benchrest, should be lots of good ones out there as it is popular.

What is it you want to do with it and how much do you want to spend?? Not sure what it costs by the time you get done with the components and smithing time but I have the Les Baer Super Varmint and could not be happier but it was a pretty penny.

Shoots 77gr into tiny groups but I do not compete.....it is my hog gun for shooting pigs under the full moon.

purpose of the rifle

This would be a varmint/fun gun. I would like to chamber it for a .221 Fireball and shoot very light (25-30 gr.) bullets in it. My fear is that this will not be successful in the accuracy department.
My fall-back position is to shoot 40 gr. bullets, and if I have feeding problems, to go to the .222.
My hang-up is that, being a benchrest shooter, I can't put up with poor accuracy. My goal would be 100 yd. groups not larger than 1" with the light bullets, or not larger than .5" with the 40 gr. I feel this should be attainable if I can get someone knowledgable to screw the parts (which I have) together.

Never seen an AR in a fireball...

...I do love mine but it's a 700 turn bolt.

You may want to take a look at the .204 Ruger. I know Les Baer makes that round and he guarantees accuracy & will send a test target. He was expensive but I came from a BR background too & I liked the fact and Les told me himself he will not ship it w/out test firing it himself.

If the 204 does not float your boat then stay w/ the .223 and just get a twist to go w/ the 40's. Your accuracy goals are not out of sight and I'm sure there is a smith who can put it together if you have parts already.

You may want to post this on ar15.com

lots of sperts on that site!!

A factory rifle can give you the accuracy you want in several of the AR platform choices. Certainly a White Oak, or Compass Lake would do well to, but my 16" Armalite does 1/2 MOA with tuned loads consistantly.

Mike Millie

I had heard good things about Mike Millie and did contact him. However, he didn't seem like he was interested in doing anything different. What's more, he didn't return my inquiries. I figured that if he wasn't respondant when he should be trying to get my business, he would probably be worse when he had it...
