Another Great Remington

It seems for a long time I couldn't' find a decent rifle in .222 caliber but recently the trend seems to have revered itself. I've managed to snag two super great ones in superb and one in LNIB condition. Now, I'm wrestling with yet a third one...a Remington 722 in .222 caliber. I only know what I've read about that model and it's all been good remarks. This one has checkering on the forend and grip and I think it's called the AC version. That must mean it's more than a plain Jane stock. I've even read in several places where there are some that say it's even more accurate and better made than it's successor, the Model 700.

Fishing for comments on this model if anyone has one.

Accuracy wise the 722's were as good but no better than the 700's. The first 722 222's came out in 1950. They were made thru 1961. During that time there were two models. The first model had a 26" barrel with a boss where a dovetail was cut for the rear sight. Also the early barrels were a lighter contour than the later rifles. About the only way you could tell the difference was to compare one of each. The transition model was made from 1958-1961 and they had 24" barrels without a boss. I believe the 722AC was the standard wood with two point checkering pattern. These were far and few between! Not sure about dates but I think somewhere in the early 70's they started hammer forging barrels. Quite sure all of 721&722 barrels were button rifled. I still have a pair of 722's today and with modern components they shoot better than they did when they were new! Hope this info helps.
