But seriously, SWMBO and I came out to Oxnard, Ca. for the Airgun Benchrest Nationals the other day and I got to tell ya, they certainly know how to put on a Nationals out here. Most deluxe shooting event I have attended to date and some of the nicest folks I have ever been around, in spite of my abrasive nature (some times). Sure glad we made the trip over.

Avoiding the fires

We intended to go to see the big trees today but the parks are closed due to fires. We went up the coast instead to the Hearst castle today and will go to Monterey tomorrow looking for the ghost of Steinbeck. Staying @ the Madonna Inn tonight, stuffed full with a big New York Strip. Life's tough on the road :)

Pete,

You were in my county...I drive by the Madonna Inn twice a day. If I had known you were coming, I could've told you where to get a steak that would make you write bad checks.

We're over with Clint tonight

We visited John Steinbeck's ghost this PM then drove through the Pebble Beach area and finally Hove Too at the Mission Inn just down the road from Clint's Mission Ranch. Nice area over here and way more people than I imagined. I can see why they here though, dern nice.

We picked up Jack kerouac, i think he said his name was, hitchikin today, On the Road

When we arrived in Monterey yesterday we went into a Tourist Information center and found the excellent service of an able hostess who calls herself Cathy. Cathy outlined her favorite sites to visit on the way south so we used her recommendations today, heaving too in San Simeon where we found a lovely seaside room @ Worst Western. ( This one ain't half bad though :) ). We will get to watch the sun sink into the sea, just like Maui :).

On the way down we saw some moderate sized Redwoods and some of the most fantastic ocean scenery we have ever lain eyes on. This should be a must see and or bucket list entry I would think. Light day tomorrow easing our way back to LA and turning in the rental Grand Caravan. We plan to stop by the Danish colony and , perhaps get a bowl of Pea Soup at that famous place that has been making it since the 30's. Must be done by now, wouldn't you think?

Later,

Pete

The Sunset was a moderate bust, big cloud formation came in and stifled it, dang it ! :(

We're coming back next spring if the fire doesn't consume the entire state.

Pete,

Yeah...it is a bit dry out here. Hopefully we get that El Nino that everybody is predicting.

In re: a killer steak, go to Jocko's in Nipomo. All their steaks are good, but their specialty is the Rib Eye, which they call a Spencer. Make a reservation as they are always busy, and make it after 5pm as that is when they start cooking over the oak fire. You're going to wonder just whereinthehell I sent you when you walk in...high brow it is not...but trust me, they make a helluva steak. My dad has traveled all over the country and has eaten at many of the highly regarded steak houses. He ranks Jocko's in the top three. 101 to the Tefft off-ramp, east on Tefft to Thompson. Jocko's is on the N/W corner of Tefft and Thompson.

A day in Pea Soup Land

We drove south this morning and noticed the Andersen's Pea Soup signs. Shades of Burma shave I thought but decided to stop by Anderson's to see, so we did. The pea soup was OK but over priced. It came to pass that the road to the Danish Colony of Solvang was the first left so we took it. Low and behold we quickly were in Denmark with wonderful European looking buildings and streets that just beg to be walked on so we did. Liked the town so much we decided to spend the night. Ms. J had noticed a sign in a restaurant that said Home Cooking. Makes one wonder if they cook the food at home and bring it in or what, eh? Anyway, we walked down there this evening and I ate one of the best restaurant meals I have had in a very long time, a Danish Special. The special consisted of a sausage, two meat balls, half a boiled potato , red cabbage and broccoli. It became obvious when I tasted the potato that it had been boiled in something more then just water; scrumptious, for a potato. The sausage and meat balls were approaching delicate and the veggies delightful. The owner recommended Firestone Cabernet for wine and it too was wonderful. Two thumbs up here for The Mustard Seed with home cooked food. We turn in the rental car tomorrow @ noon and wait for the big bird to take us back to New England. It's been a great trip, in spite of the fires. Sometimes ya just get lucky I guess.

Safe In the Crown Plaza

We arrived at the Crown Plaza at LAX around 1:00 PM today, marveling at how we were able to drive 10 days out here without wrecking the Caravan. I held my breath quite often on the 101 and the 405 with it's 24 MPH stop & go. Glad to be out of it, I must say. We will rest up here and get on the Big Bird tomorrow about noon bound for the other coast.

We have enjoyed our visit out here and I must say, I like it out here. I could see wintering here instead of Florida if the was at all feasible. It's a whole different feeling here vs Florida, which I don't much like, all said and done. I have never found a place or area in Florida I think I could call home. Perhaps it's the mountains, I don't know but I do like it. Things seem more vibrant here. Perhaps it has to do with the average age of the people???
