Advice on which 6.5 for SA Remington

I have a SA Remington that i would like to rebarrel with a 6.5 cal. to use on coyotes and medium size big game animals. Want to use 120 to 140 gr. bullets. Leaning toward 6.5 Rem. Magnum but don't know if it would be a better cartrage than a .260 Rem or a 6.5 x 47. I would appreciate any input that anyone can give. Thanks

What bolt face does it have? If it's got a standard (.308) bolt face it would seem to me that a .260 Rem, 6.5x47, or 6.5-284 would be the way to go. There's better brass available, the bolt face wouldn't need to be opened up, and in the case of the first two at least feeding from the magazine shouldn't be a problem.

Dwneill: I own a Remington 700 VLS (Varmint Laminated Stock) in caliber 260 Remington.
This is an accurate and dependable Rifle.
I have taken Antelope, Deer and Coyotes with it along with some Rock Chucks.
I believe Remington only made this model in this caliber for one or two years.
Still it might be worth your while to do a search for one of these.
I have been very pleased with the Rifle and the caliber.
I have seen some 6.5x47's shooting but never shot one myself so I can't add much on that caliber.
I use the pointy and flat flying Nosler 100 gr. Ballistic Tips in my 260 VLS.
Best of luck with the project.
And by the way the cartridge functions flawlessly out of the short action of my 700.

seems clear to me...

you'd enjoy the 260 Rem and it would do a great job for you. Shooting coyotes with a 6.5X284 seems overbore (pun intended) :D

Light bullets in the 260 (~100Gr) will have the velocity you are looking for and it will be fun to shoot!

~120gr bullets for deer will be great. Animals bigger than deer should have a bigger cartridge and bullet diameter.

The 260 is great. I just chambered a 6.5x47L yesterday for my Mod 7 Remington. I believe it will be a nice accurate all around rifle for Tx deer and hogs.

The .260 chambering in XP-100R's harvest Dall Sheep(200+Lbs) & Caribou(400+Lbs) at 400+yds very well.

For long shots on dogs,I prefer the 6.5 RSAUM,as it cycles better than the 6.5RM in a short action if you have a .532" bolt face.

I am a big 260 fan, it does everything the 6.5x55 Swede does, only it does it in a short action. The Swede has proven track record as a hunting cartridge and there is no reason the 260 won't work as well. Oh yes, I have owned three of them, friends keep talking me out of them and then I have to build another one.

p.s. - the elk around here don't know that the 260 is for elk hunting, they just keep dying from a cartridge that is too small.

The 6.5x47 Lapua is an excellent cartridge from what I read. You have to love Lapua brass. I wish I had built one instead of a 6.5-284 honestly. I've had a great time shooting .260 Remington as well. But to add one, considered the 6.5 Creedmoor? You'll be able to get CHEAP factory ammo for it if you ever need it.
