The mount is most likely for a reflector type astronomical telescope. The rifle was set up as a way to aim the larger telescope that it was mounted to. Scopes that are set up for this sort of use are called finderscopes.

There's always some practical person to put the lid on a joke.

I shoulds figured it out myself. A friend's son is a stargazer & has just that setup on the 8" reflector he ground for himself.

I think you are right. I used to have a 6 inch reflector that had a small spotter on it, mounted just like that.

But that was 45+ years ago.........jackie
