Absent mindedly, I posted this

on another forum. This is the forum that I wanted.
I would like opinions from as many of you as possible in this.

I have been sucked into the local boys club at our range and have shot my deuce mag against their bigger stuff. They shoot score and agg matches to 300 yds on Sunday mornings.
I don't know if I would ever attempt to enter a formal shoot anywhere but the possibility exists.
I would like to build a switch barrel rifle, probably 30 br and 6 br improved (of one design or another).
What action would you start with? (custom or not)
Whose barrels would you use?
Who would you get to do the work?
What stock would you choose?
What trigger would you choose?
And...Which scope would you buy and what bases and rings?

This is not meant to start any arguments, everyone here should know the old saying about opinions, and should not get their feelings hurt! That is not my intent!
I just want to get the most bang for my buck all around and have a rifle that is competitive.
If you so desire you can PM me or email me so that nobodys' feelings get crushed... ;-D
Thanks in advance
Mark

C'mon guys

I'm really serious about this as a winter project. I have a lot of competition experience as a smallbore shooter as well as service rifle matches. I know I'm not a BR shooter of the caliber of most of you, nor do I have the experience that you do. I'm really looking for expert advice on this build and any input will be taken into serious consideration. This (BR) is a subject that I know little about, but I'm too damned old to be getting into all of the contorted positions that I used to, so BR sounds like something that may interest me. I have been around shooters and shooting most of my life and I enjoy the brotherhood and friendships that I have built by being involved in the shooting sports. Besides this, wouldn't it be fun to have another newcomer to beat up on at matches...:D

Mark,
It's going to be hard to get a truly good answer to this question because there are so many choices out there. You can check out the match reports of any of the bigger matches and you will see the more common equipment used, and pretty much any of the custom lines of barrels, actions, stocks, triggers, etc... are capable of winning.
If the guys that you shoot with are using custom actions I would ask if they would let you cycle them a few times and see what type and configuration you like best.
Every custom barrel maker is going to put out OK to Excellent barrels at any given time it's just that their OK is better than factory Best for the most part.
If you want a list here is what I am building for registered comps both group and score:
BAT action, Bartlein barrels (30br and 6ppc), jewel trigger, custom rings, bruno/mcmillan stock, and a weight system to be able to go from LV to HV in either group or score...scope to be determined but most likely a comp leupold or sightron 36x.
You will find a tremendous variation in equipment mixing and matching and any one of them will be able to shoot...but can I make it shoot? That's the fun!
You may have luck checking in the classifieds or at shooters corner "The List" is quite extensive and Bob White is a great guy to talk to. He should have something that will fit the bill.
I know that this may not be the straight answer you were looking for, but it's tough in this or any game to say that one action, barrel, scope, etc...is better than the other.
You can pm me here if you have any other questions. I would be more than happy to help in any way that I can.

Like Mike said,
there are a lot of variables here. I'll assume you are on a budget, but if not it's still not bad advice. I would suggest that you start with a used rifle that has been set up for shooting score. If you are right handed, the RBLP confiuration is good, you might even find a dual or drop port. Right now is a good time to be looking for a used BR rifle and if you are patient you can get a proven winner for much less than the cost of a build. You should be able to get one of these for $1600-2000. With a 30BR you can reasonably expect 5000-6000 rounds of barrel life and maybe more. If you get a good one, you can compete in group matches and possible win a few depending on the competition.

The scope will depend on your budget. Low end would be a used Weaver 36x. It will do what you want for $300-325. I prefer a NF 12x42, but that's just me.
