i know this is a benchrest site and most bbl's are top quality.
but
i bought a new savage 223 and the bore was not very smooth.
i decided to try final finish..all 50 bullets and see how things end.
i have finished, followed instructions, and i can say without a doubt,
that the bore is smooth compared to the railroad tracks i started with.

i will do some load testing and see how it does. it was not real impressive
before the lapping.

Would be good to get a "final" report on your endeavor. Once you shoot the rifle, please give us something on whether the accuracy improved or it was easier to clean...and heaven forbid, anything "unfortunate".

not a complete answer but a good indicator.
i shot a 10 shot ladder to establish a new base line for the "new" bbl.
0.3 steps 60 grain bergers.
the 10 shot "group" was smaller than some prior 5 shot groups.
more to come.

A number of years ago, I had a Win M70 Supergrade 338 Win Mag that was made during the last few years before the New Haven plant closed. I was lucky to get 3 inch groups from it, so I tried the Tubbs Final Finish on it. I figured it couldn't hurt. Well, to the end of the story, after firing the 50 rounds according to the instructions, the same loads I was shooting before were now giving me groups in the 1.5 inch range. I would say that was a major improvement. That rifle went from one I would never thing of hunting with to one that had OK hunting accuracy. I was tempted to buy another box of Final Finish to see if I could improve it more, but someone made me an offer for the rifle and I sold it.

today i shot two 5 shot groups of 8208 with berger 60 match varmint
with a mild left right, right left wind. with flags but i am not an experienced short range
br shooter. all at 100

24.5
0.502 group, 0.423 vert, 0.318 hor

24.8
0.604 group, 0.126 vert, 0.604 hor

much better than prior shooting, so yes it seems to work well
inspite of the wind giving me a .6, i like the vert of only 0.126 on the second load.

i'll post again after cleaning

a total of 28 rounds fired,
cleaning was easy.
i am a chemical cleaner not a brush guy
two applications of wipeout with accelerator and it was clean.

in my case, clearly worth the money time and effort.

Taper the bore?

Does this system possibly slightly taper the bore as well as smooth/finish it?
Can you feel any tightening down the bore using a tight patch?

no clue
what i KNOW,
it cleans easier
it shoots better
it is an inexpensive savage that was a special thru cabelas

on some of my custom rifles i can feel a tight muzzle.
