A POGO CHRISTMAS CAROL

Sung to the tune of “Deck the Halls”.

Deck us all with Boston Charlie,
Walla, walla wash and a Kalamazoo.

Nora’s freezin’ on the trolley,
Swaller dollar cauliflower, alley garoo.

If you know any more stanza's, please feel free to add the parts and re-post. Or make them up and post them. Who knows, they might be better.

All of us older farts remember Pogo, but many of you younger one’s won’t know who the heck we’re talking about.

It’s Pogo the Possum of comic strip fame. “We have met the enemy, and he is us”.

Roy

Political satire of an earlier time, remember the strip well. Was carried by the Milwaukee Journal around here.

Deck us All...Here is the rest

Here is the rest.

Don't we know archaic barrel,
lilly boy, louie boy, Louisville Lou
Trolley Molly don't love Harold
(And because I can never remember the last phrase)
Swaller Dollar, Cauliflower, Alley Garoo.

Actually tho, I think that it was Grundoon that actually sang it. The only recognizable words he ever spoke.

My family has sung it, at the top of our lungs, every Christmas, for a long time.

Merry Christmas

I grew up in a house that subscribed to Good Old Days magazine so I'm somewhat familiar with Pogo but didn't know how much of this song there was.

I've got complete collections of Gary Larson and Bill Waterson, I'm into the medium, just a different era ;)

And don't get me started on the broader subject of satire! We'll be banned fer shure!

LOL

Thanks Roy... one a' dese days I just gotta' meander up yer way...... try dat chickory

It's down yer way Al. Down.

For new orleans, everything is down. Except certain parts of Texas and Florida and of course, the equator. Notice I used all lower caps for new orleans. Because we're all down.:D

Pogo and Calvin are my idols. And General Bullmoose.

Oh I'm well aware of all that :) I'm a yankee remember, we're picky about direction and time and mileage and such. Our descriptions are "north 3.5mi, east 22mi to intersection of XX and XX etc etc./.."

But I've got friends and rellies all over the South and they're constantly going "down to Virginia" or "over to New Hampshire," my daughter's lived in Sa' C'lina three yrs now and she's getting sucked into it.... she recently told me they'd gone "down to Washington DC" for the weekend.

I've been under the impression that Southerners have a deep-seated psychological aversion to the term "up" so it was with tongue firmly planted in cheek that I said what I did.

Sorry

;)

Jerry,
"We have met the enemy and he is us!", is the saying I think you are talking about or Pogo's political sign, "I go Pogo!"

Kelly started the Pogo comic strip on the day I was born.

Thanks
I was trying to remember that the other day. My wife , who is much younger than me, was listening to Deck the Halls. It reminded me of Pogo, but I could only recall the first line. She never heard of Pogo.
Don

You beat me to it Dan. It's definitely "We have met the enemy and he is us."

The latest generation has replaced "I go Pogo" with "Frodo lives." Go figure.

Dan, when Pogo was running for President, I think about 1956-57, his slogan was'

I go Pogo
The Progressive Possum Party
The only Candidate who could
stand on his own four feet.

Hey now, don' chew be pickin' on Tolkien! The Hobbit was published in 1937 and it's STILL relevant. We've got a whole new generation getting hooked on the guy.

Agree or disagree, OK, but the dude's got staying power.

LOL
