a few classic sporters

i didn't want to hijack the other thread so here's a few of the classic's i've picked up.
this one is a sedgley built 1903 in 30-06 that needs a little work to get it back in shape. about 1/4" was cut off the stock when the recoilpad was fitted so i'll just refit a winchester metal buttplate & live with it being a little short. the barrel also had 2" cut off it & was missing the front sight, after 2 years of searching for a original front sight i've come to the conclusion i'll have to make one for it. i have a lyman longslide 48 for it that i haven't installed yet & a original sedgley sling. so far this rifle is the highest known renumbered sedgley & the only one with the barrel marked special cal. 30-06.

the next one is a german guild style 1903 with a two leaf express rear sight custom front ramp with the small german dovetail front sight, butterknife bolt handle, double set triggers & a hendsoldt wetzlar dialytan 4x scope sitting in claw mounts. i've never really liked the stock on this one so i may restock it in the future.

this one i believe is a copy of a nra sporter & not the real thing. it is in the correct serial number range but doesn't have the nra marked trigger guard. the previous owner cut a groove all the way down the stock under the lyman sight & had a different bolt handle welded on that had to be notched into the stock to clear a scope that was mounted in a sidemount. i've considered having the stock repaired but for now i'll just shoot it as is & its an excellent shooter.

i haven't had a chance to shoot this one yet.

springfields

nice jim.
i built a sporterized springfield 03-a3 for my wife back in the 90's.
i wish i had the insight to buy several of those actions because now they are so out of reach one can pick up a new rem 700 for less cash. about the only bone i could pick with the springfield design is the split firing pin. though from the looks of those old gals they can fair quite well if one doesnt have a propensity to dry firing and cracking the collars off. again, nice assortment of classic iron. Those are nice rifles.
I miss the days when all rifles were walnut and blued steel.

lee speed

Nice stuff Jim! I like the old sporters and the classic lines.
That Lee Speed is wonderful! Would you be kind enough to post more detailed pics of it?
I have a Wesley Richards Lee Speed that has been "customized". Bubba may not just live in the U.S., he may also live in England, Africa, India, or Australia. I say this because the "bubbaization" of my rifle seems to be old, due to the patina of everything, and as I understand it, my rifle was probably made as a civilian equivalent to the British military long lee and sold to help Brit civilians supplement the military in these countries, if need be.

I want to restore the rifle to a classic look. I don't think I could get it to look as good as yours, but it just seems wrong to leave it in it's current state. But I need more ideas on what it is supposed to look like!

Thank you!
Greg

greg,
my lee speed is slightly bubba'ed too. someone put a side scope mount on it so it has 4 extra holes in the side of the receiver that i'm going to fill in eventualy. it originally had a full length cape rib but when it was rebarreled in south africa musgrave & sons just cut the section out of the rib with the sights & soldered it to the new barrel & soldered on the front sight from a mauser b420. i guess the person who owned it at that time couldn't afford or didn't want to have the cape rib put on the new barrel.
here are a couple more pictures, i still need to take some of the engraving & other details on the receiver.

the engraving is wore off the bottom of the magazine but its an original lee speed mag.

nitroexpress.com has a section on lee speeds that you can use to see how yours should look. http://forums.nitroexpress.com/postlist.php?Cat=0&Board=lee&page=0 hope you restore it & take it on a few hunts. jeff's outfitters has the correct thong slings & if yours still has the large sling eyes
