I have an old 95 spanish mauser in 7x57 , Its light , cute so Im goin to play w/it . thought about an AI rechambering , I know these arent overely strong but I cant see where an AI conversion would necessarily be a higher pressure Rnd. would it ? Of course You could over load a std. ctg. but all things considered equal I cant see where the AI should be higher pressure. Course I dont design Rockets for a livin either, SOOOOO would a REAL ROCKET SCIENTIST PLEASE stand up & chime in . I aint purty now but any further devaluation of my looks might be catastrophic to my marriage.

Dear Mud Fence---

While you may not realize how "purty" you are now,
wait until you stuff a 60 thsnd. p.s.i. load into an action
designed for 40 thsnd. MAX. You may have to rely on some
one else's opinion, as you very well could loose both eyes
with your dead body. Do not even consider that "upgrade".
LORD loves a coward! Steve

It is the nature of AI chamberings to give less indicaiton of pressure at a given pressure. I would guess that your barrel will not be fitted with a strain gage hooked to some sort of pressure measuring device, so this masking of pressure signs could well be dangerous, given the action's obvious limitations.

You do not have to load the Improved round to modern pressures. But that would mean it was no better than the standard round. To enjoy shooting that rifle for a long time, assuming it is safe to shoot, stick to the standard 7x57 loaded to mild pressures

The larger bolt face of the present 7X57 (.473) versus the 7.62X39 (.441)would present a problem, (probably a major rework of the bolt face and extractor).
Enjoy the rifle as is and spend the big bucks on a true custom not a reworked military.

Since there are no factory rounds for the 7 x 57 AI the you would have to reload.
Keep in mind that the pressure of any reload depends on what you put into and onto the cartridge. It would be just as easy for you to blow up this action reloading for 7 x 57 as it would be reloading for 7 x 57 AI.
60,000 PSI is 60,000 PSI no matter what cartridge you put it in.
If you are reloaded a 7.62 x 39 to 65,000 PSI do you think it would be safer than reloading a 7 x 57 AI to 40,000 PSI or reloading a 300 WSM to 50,000 PSI?
The advantage of the 7 x 57 AI would be a marginally increased case capacity wich might give you an extra 25 to 100 fps at the same pressure.
Is that worth the cost?
Ted
