6PPC with 80 Grain Bullet

Was wondering if my Shilen barrel with 13.5 twist barrel will stabilize an 80 grain bullet? Would like to shoot this rifle in some 400 yard varmint matches and trying to identify the heaviest, highest BC bullet it will shoot.

Thanks

Jim, try it....... Think you'll find it's a no-go... Unstable and very poor accuracy, if it'll even hit the paper at 400...!
All ya need really, is 100yds to SEE the results...

I would recommend the Sierra 70gr BTHP Matchking... It WILL stabilize in your 13.5 twist... I have seen them shoot VERY well in a 14 twist ... No problems... Not the highest BC but you will be hard pressed to get a higher BC and stable bullet in your twist rate....

The 70gr Nosler BT and 70gr Sierra Blitzking are both EXCELLENT bullets that shoot well in a 13.5 / 14 twist barrel.

Don't get too caught-up in BC for shoots at 400 yds...... You would be surprised how well a regular ole "point blank" 68 gr .260 ish BC bullet will shoot at 400 yds..... Pretty Salty...!!!

good luck,
cale

Not real sure shilen makes a 13.5 twist barrel?? Arent button barrels only twisted to hole numbers? To answer your question, i have successfully shot 80gr Berger bullets in my 13.5 Krieger 6ppc with good results. problem wasnt the twist for me rather the free bore of my chamber. Most 6ppc chambers wont have the proper free bore. Lee

Lee, a button barrel make can make whatever twist rate they want .... As Long as the button is configured for the rate AND the sine bar on the rifler is equipt with the correct rate.
It's why a gain twist is "almost" impossible with a button barrel.... No problem for the cut barrel makers.

Amazing you got an 80gr pill to stay in a strait line with your twist.!!! Most I've seen go sideways throught the paper, if at all..... On the free bore, yes I agree... the PPC case starts to get "full of bullet" if ya know what I mean.

Also Jim, try the 70gr Bergers, Hornadys and Speers.... The 75gr Hornady V Max may just fit your bill.... On the edge with your twist, but should be stable with the highest BC...

I'd like to know the answer to the original question as well. Since my factory Ruger 6ppc has a 1 in 12 twist. I use about 70 grain Barts. Can it stabilize a higher grain bullet?

1-12" Yes 80's shoot VERY well..... 90gr length bullets will be tops even for a 1-12"....

Just try a heavy'er than 90 and see..... Heck, it >might< shoot fine..?...

Still, as Lee was alluding to.... The VAST MAJORITY off PPC chambers will cause a significant loss of capacity... Lot of bullet in the case.... Will need a .090 + throat to accommodate "better".. Of course, a 6BR would be a better case on these heavys .... Anyway..
