6mmAI vs 6-284...opinions?

I've got a 700 long and short action that I was wanting to build a 6mm wildcat on. I've narrowed my choices to the 6-284 and the 6mmAI 40 degree. I already have two 6mm Rems so I have been leaning towards the ackley, but I like the 6-284 also. Any pro's or cons to either? Would the long or short action be a better choice? They both look pretty close ballistically. Any opinions appreciated. ~Jackson

the cal is up to you but on my 6mm rem i seat the bullets so long(old 700FS) that I have to use a long MTM cartiage box, on my custom 6.5 x 284 I used a long action so I could get a loaded round in the magazine

yhe wind is my friend,,,,,,,,,

As David said if you plan on useing the magazine L/A is the way to go,if not the S/A will work just fine (single loaded) for either cartridge. If you use 85grn bullets or lighter you could get by with a S/A for both carts.and still use the magazine, but I think that would defeat the purpose of the larger case capacities of either case. 87gr. and up is where these cases realy shine IMO. A 28-30 in. barrel will help get the most vel.out of them also. I have 3 6-284s so you can guess my preferance;).Slow powders H-1000,VV 170,H-870, VV 165, RL 25, RL 22 all work well .As you are aware throat erosion should be checked regularly for either case.

Roger T. would you share some info on your loads for the 6MM-284 useing RL powder. Weight, bullet weight, velocity, accuracy, etc. I use Reloader 19 for my 6MM AI with 75 gr. Sierra's. I have a very nice Mauser built by someone named Conlon in 220 Swift which is quite shot out. I can't get close to the lands even with 60 gr bullets. I plan to have it rebarreled to 6MM-284 and could use, would like, some load data from an experienced shooter.
BTW FWIW My first try at forming (ie reduceing the neck) by just running a 284 case through a 6MM-284 sizer resulted in a few crushed cases before I realized I needed a better way. Frugle guy that I am, rather than buy a new/used intermediate set of dies, I kept my eye open at gun shows for an alternative and eventually found a 25-284 RCBS trim die on a fellows table for 5 bucks. Took it home, ran the 284 cases through it, then through the 6mm - 284 resizer and (ta-dot ta-da) perfect cases with no losses.
Hope to here from you.

I enjoyed my 6X284 while it lasted... I never did get the speed out of it that I wanted but it was accurate. When I get around to having the barrel set back, it will be a 6BR or 6X47L.

On average how many rounds are you guys getting out of your 6mmAI or 6-284 before having it set back?

Rcvd. Thanks

Roger, info rcvd and a PM:) thank you sent.

Thanks for the Info. I have decided to go with the 6mmAI. What length barrel are you guys using in these rounds? I was thinking of 26" maybe 28". I have a friend who is wanting me to rechamber a barrel he has that is 24" and that just seems to me that it would be too short to get the potential of the cartridge. Keep in mind this will be a heavy sporter weight barrel for a hunting gun. Thanks

barrel length

I have a 28" 1:9 twist with a 0.274 neck. It shoots the 107 SMK/105AMax/95VLDs outstanding. Every told me I needed a 1:8 for the 107SMK, even Sierra. My gunsmith said use the 1:9 and since he has a few hall of fame points for shooting I went with him call. Glad I did. Not sure how faster it will live at the velocities I am running, but that is what a rechamber is for. luck with your 6Ackley, tiny

To answer your specific question, 26" would be minimum for me, and 28" would be preferable.

LIFE for my Douglas premiums is around 1100, and then you can see the difference on PAPER, BUT not dogs!
