6mm XC- powder- burning rate choice

Hi, sorry about bordering here with this kind of question, but someone could advice me, I hope. I am joining some Czech hunter´s matches(Europe) -it is more dependable on your ability to shoot from clasic positions like prone standing and so on(never bipod) and I plan to get a new 6XC barrel for it mainly fot it´s mild recoil. I plane to use 90gr Scenar Bullets and to keep velocity at about 3000f/s from 22inch barrel. It should be easy as I hope with this light bullet. Do you think, that barrel life would be longer if I completely fill the case with some slow burning powder so the preassure would be lower and velocity would achieve 3000 feet per second with almost full case of some slow burning powder (preassure would not be too high), or the barrel life fould be longer if I use much less of some faster burning powder, but of course much higher preassure to get the same velocity? Or it does not matter as long as the velocity is the same for both? (Both powders would be single base) Which powder would you recomend for 90gr bullet?
Thans for your reply.

Best regards, Petr

Howdy !

You're not going to know exactly what powder combustion temperatures you actually obtain w/ any powder; w/ any certainty.

Reknowned ballistician Homer Powley developed his " Powley Computer " as an aid to shooters/reloaders, to help w/ things like powder selection.
Here is one site: http://kwk.us/powley.html Please be sure to check out the "drop downs " included there.

A lot of competitive shooters highly value the use of powders showing less temperature sensitivity, and good consistency.
Powders like Hodgdon's H4350 and newer IMR 4451 and IMR 4955 are examples. In 6XC, I'm sure H4350 will be mentioned by many.

You can often obtain great accuracy via use of " high load density ". Use of a slower burn rate case-filling powder might result in a small velocity
loss compared to the use of a faster powder; while still giving superb accuracy and viable external ballistics.
It's the route I went w/ my " DEEP 6 " wildcat cartridge, which has case capacity of 51.2gr H2O. I've been using RL-22 and/or a full case of IMR7188 w/ 95 - 107gr bullets. Accuracy is superb, while velocity is a tad lower than what I'd have obtained w/ a powder like 4350.
Still, this approach works for my shooting needs.

Thanks for your help. I was reading many mixed opinions, seems that some people prefer slow burning powder for less preassure, others prefer faster burning powder since they can use smaller charges which in theory should also result in smaller wear....

I bought an 8 pound jug of the new Reloader 16 and tried it in my 6BR with a .135 throat. This Rifle has been shooting very well in Matches at 200 and 300 yards with 31 grains of Varget with the 108 Berger Match.

I got great velocity with the Reloader 16, but the accuracy was not up to par. The difference, sub 3/4 5 shot groups at 400 yards with the Varget, 1 1/2 inch at 400 with the Reloader 16. I just could not tighten, trying several different combinations.

The extra capacity of the 6xC might work well with it, as one shooter is getting good results in his Dasher.

Thanks Jackie

Thank you for your reply. But I am not in a quest for max velocity since I believe that for my matches it should not a big advantage anyway(distance up to 300m and no bipods or any such steady suport allowed- shooter is suporting it only). As I mentioned. I want to get velocity about 3000feet per second with 90gr bullet to save the barrel. With such a slow velocity(for 6XC) I should have a choice- either to use very slow powder and charges could be over 40gr or get a fast enough powder and than the charges could be about 34gr...

Thanks for your reply.
