6BR barrel length

I have heard the same opinion from a couple of different people that say 30" is too long for a standard 6BR barrel.
The opinion being, that velocity is lost due to all of the powder being consumed before the bullet exits the muzzle
& the extra friction slows the bullet (talking heavy bullets). Has anyone ever tested this theory and came up
with an optimum barrel length for bullets in the 105 to 107 grain range?

Thanks Charles. It's interesting that the ES was best at 28". Do you think that length would change with different powders?

Quite likely. Or different bullets, or different barrel... I'd point out that statistically, with about 70 shots, SD is a better predictor than ES.

I'm not sure what you're chasing, but I do think all this kinda isn't the way my mind works. Not to say you're wrong, but for me, barrel length is determined by rifle balance & weight rules.

I don't run a BR but i use Dashers and the barrels run from 26.5 - 30" and i would say ES. has nothing to do with length, mine will stay in the single digits in all of them same loads shoot in all of them. Now the biggest thing is the speed gained over 28" is about 7 - 10 FPS. per inch and i find it's not worth the extra cost of the barrel and it's harder to get balanced and make weight. I went the long barrel rout and set them back to gain a little more life but the lands are starting to round out and i didn't see where you gained so i went back to 28".......jim
