600 Yd Point Of View --

My buddy, on the next ridge, has 100 yds just off the landing in front of the garage. Huge berm, no neighbors so we can actually shoot at all hours. It's lighted.

But we're looking for 300, 600 yds, even 1,000 yds. We're on the Oregon Coast, and so basically butt up against the Coast Range. There are 100 yd. stretches of flats, but they all seem to be low-land next to the bays and have pasturage on them. Even 300 yds of flat ground is hard to find. Weyerhauser is not overly enthusiastic about shooting on their land -- They allow it, but there's no motor access.

Inevitably, the trees get in the way.

Since the recent storm (December 7, 2007) there are clear-cuts where the blow-down from the storm has been hauled out. But it's hardly "range" material. More like, "Hey, let's see if'n we can hit that there stump over on the other side of the draw!"

No, they won't let us shoot on the beach. :D

100 yds is boring . . .

My suggestion is to move out of Oregon and let the tree huggers have it!

Seriously, here in the Southeast we have a similar problem, not enough flat ground. What I do is, where my private bench is, I can shoot from the top of one ridge, across a valley, and into the other ridge. The problems are twofold, one-no wind flags. But many 600/1K ranges are over similar, no place for flags, like Oak Ridge and Hawks Ridge.

My second problem here is that I am shooting across a public road-illegal. Illegal but safe because I am not in line of sight of the road from the bench, and the bullet path, in this setup, is about 400 feet above the roadway.

Hell, I can't see flags past 50 yards anyway.

Above the white house, almost to the top of that ridge is the 600 yard target,
this photo taken at a point about 50 yards behind the bench looking North (in Winter) (From the bench the road would not be visible);

This photo taken 180 degrees from the above, looking South (in the Spring). Do we both need to move to Kansas or what??

Shoot over a road and a House??

The house is about 75 yards left of the bullet path. If I can shoot a 1"-2" group at 600 I'm not worried about the house being hit.
Besides, from the bench the house is way below line-of-sight.

See the grove of trees to the right rear of the house? The target is about 30 yards to the right of the right edge of that.

BTW, just on the slight left, in the next valley is Kettlefoor Gun Club. I shoot there too but their very fine 30 bench range only goes to 300 yards.
This is the North side of the same ridge that my 600 yard target is on the South face of.

Looks EXACTLY like the view from my front porch. I could shoot across the road, across the creek and over a couple houses to get 600 - 1000 yds. We have clearcuts nearby where we can get this distance, but access to the "target area" means walking across slash or walking along the access road -- which might be a mile or more out of the way.

It's OK. I can drive to Central Oregon, get out of the rain and into the desert. Then there are miles and miles of flat, open vistas. And the weather is nicer too.
