6 mm br

given a 1/14 twist barrel and lapua brass and attention to detail I have seen that in a article by the late gunsmith t j Jackson a 6 mm br can shoot along side a 6 ppc.in the pc he said that the case neck is very important to be square to the chamber and the neck should be neck turned as perfect as can be.the article was in precsion shooting .
now before some of you chime in I am talking about the lapua brass that the ppc is made from .

You can shoot anything alongside a ppc- and it will beat some on the line. Always some broke scopes and various other mechanical issues. But if a 6br could beat a ppc on a regular basis we would all be shooting one

Shooters have taken the BR case and shorten it to where it has the same case capacity as the PPC, the Taldog, using Lapua brass, etc. and it still will not shoot with the old tried and true PPC.

Like Dusty's bro' says "shoot a PPC or get beat by a PPC".

I do like the experimentation tho. If there wasnt any we would still be shooting deuces

I guess the experimentation is why I enjoy shooting benchrest From about 2002 to 2012 I have shot 4 different configurations just in the 220 Russian/PPC case and only God knows how many powder mixtures, freebore lengths, barrel twist rates, and number of grooves. Just in the number of grooves I've been from 3 to 8 groove configurations including 5 grooves. And they all can be made to shoot respectable groups.

Some shooters like Larry Feusse (sp) have been way outside of what I have tried. IIRC, he even shot a 17 or 20 cal at Holton last year in the nationals. Tim Gardner, of Douglas barrels, shoots a 20 cal at 1000 yards and does quite well. Actually, early on in benchrest there were a bunch, 22 Wasp, 222, SM Wasp (Seeley Masker) Taldog, Waldog, and a bunch of others.

The Dec 2014 rail gun match in phoenix Dan Sutton did very well with a bag gun in 6mmBR. I have a Sako All custom built for praire dogs that shoots pretty close to my ppc guns and its a 6mmBR.

I never said they wont shoot good. But at 99% of the big matches (over 100 shooters) they will be in the bottom 1/3. Thats not saying they wont slip up to the top sometimes but its not likely. And im a 6Br lover so dont take all that the wrong way

A 6BR can frequently shoot alongside a 6PPC, some days it might finish out in front of it, but not very often. I am talking at 100/200 . Now a 30BR that is another matter. 6 BR is a great cartridge at longer ranges with heavier bullets, in an appropriate twist barrel.

Dick i dont see a 30br ever competing either. They do shoot good and as bad as i wish they would a 30 is good for score but will never beat a ppc day in and day out. Is been tried for 20yrs now.

single group record was shot with a 30PPC. 30's will shoot, but not everyone can take the recoil.

We built our first 6 BR in 1989 and have been pleased with its performance. The gun has probably seen 12 barrels plus in that time; everything from Harts, to Shilens, to Kriegers. No doubt the BR is capable of fine precision, but when I decided to get into competition I opted for the PPC. Once completed, I'll shoot 6 PPC to start for group. Down the road though I hope to compete in score. If, or should I say, when that happens I'll likely use a 30 PPC or 30 Major barrel.

6 br v 6 ppc

does the lapua 6 mm br equal the 6 ppc lapua in quality?if so then why does the ppc have over the br? the case s should be simaler as far as the way they are made right.

Yes the cases are the same quality as all lapua brass no matter the caliber. Case design wins out here. Why does a 6br consistently outperform a 243win even though you can get lapua brass for both? Cartridge design.

The answer to your question is right here in Jerry's post #3. It's case design and capacity. The 6 Talldog is almost identical in both and can compete
with a 6PPC, but it's a helluvalot easier to make a 6PPC case than a 6 Talldog. If the 6BR was equal to the 6PPC then you would see many more on the line, but you don't. I'm extremely hard headed, but even I am learning not to try and re-invent the wheel. If you want short range accuracy, just put together a 6PPC and learn to shoot it.

Volume to bore ratio is near perfect. Coupled with a short body, sharp shoulder, and 0.059” flash-hole you get efficient and consistent combustion. Or as some benchresters would say, “good chamber behavior”. The PPC's edge is small over the BR, but I do believe it exists....at least for short range.

How many rounds is a 6mm PPC good for?

G'day.

My local dealer has a 6mm PPC for sale. It has a fluted Lilja barrel with 635 rounds through it. Barrel is marked .270, I presume this is the neck diameter. Apart from the fact that the stock is a horrible gaudy blue and does not come with dies or much more info, I was wondering if it's worth forking out $1,500 for it. My club shoots BR comps up to 300m.

It's hard to find a decent custom gunsmith near me (Australia) and general opinion is that it would cost me 3 times that to have one built.

It's here, http://www.elks.com.au/hunting/hunting.htm 1/2 way down the page centrefire Rifles, used page (Remington 700 Benchrest Rifle, Clancy built, sleeved action, neck turn chamber, Lilja barrel, Weaver type bases and bushed bolt + superb trigger!).

As this is a 6mm BR thread I thought it might be best to ask the experts here.

Thanks * doghunter *

G'day mate,

Have a look at this site, http://www.benchrestbulletin.net/drupal/ and touch base with anyone there who will offer you opinion and maybe relevant advice. 6PPC are pretty much considered to be great to 300, even if at the longer range the 6BR coming into it's own element.

[B]Fred Hasecuster shot his way into the Hall of Fame using a 6BR / Talldog. He was the first and probably the last. (simply because not many shooters shooting in short range BR) My first match in 1987, I went to the line w/Factory 40X-BR , in 6 BR. I had 30 cartridges,, made for full length BR Remington brass. I had to shorten the brass,, cut excess w/hacksaw,, turn inside and outside of necks. I had no idea what I was doing. Some bullets were tite and some you could pull out of the case w/ease. Only had one sighter for the five targets.. ( as if I knew what a sighter was) My friend knew what I thougt was quite a bit about it. In fact it was his rifle,, he bought new for $490. I finished 4th in LV. (not enuf ammo to shoot any more. First two groups were .198" and .198". I thought I was hot s_ _ _,, and then the wind came. Me , being stupid , not believing the wind could push a bullet,, probably kept me from (the "Pine Board" status) Today I realize how good that gun was, it being wood stocked,, and Remington barrel.[ /B]

No matter what they say bet on it having twice as many rounds down the barrel as advertised. But seeing as how hard it is to get stuff over there get it for $1250 and plan on a new barrel. If he says the barrel is still good let him keep it and use it on something else.
