6.5x284 ejection issues

I just completed my Savage long action from a 112bvss, I rebarreled it to a 6.5x284, replaced the bolthead to accommodate the 6.5 x 284 case, when I open the bolt, I have to tinker with the case to get it out, the case seems to hit the bottom part of the port, due to the case will not come out on an upward angle, when I have the bolt in my hand the case will come out easily, if you tip the case directly inline with the ejector, but in the action the case doesn't have this clearance.what did you do to remedy this situation. I tried it both ways with and without the plunger.

hey chet

go get another piece of brass from another guy/friend/shooting buddy that also shoots 6.5x284, and try their brass. I heard some similar problem just like this and it was a brass issue that was a bad batch and swelled to much after firing. Lets start here first to rule out bad brass, then some others can chime in about extractors and what not.

I have the same problem with new lapua and once fired from my previous 6.5x284, It is not brass related.

Try:

  • Replace the ejector spring - sometimes they get mashed and don't function quite right
  • Lengthen the slot on the ejector pin - might help the ejector keep contact with the case head a little longer and keep the case from popping loose from the extractor
  • Make sure you don't have one of the old 'brass' colored extractors - replace with newer steel one
  • Try recontouring the underside of the extractor so it will 'bite' deeper into the case groove
  • Get used to it being a single shot and having to pick out the empties... :(

I have one 10FP that is just the devil's spawn when it comes to this issue. I've tried all the above, and pretty much everything short of just replacing the whole blasted bolt, head & body and all, to no avail. My other Savages (all Precision Target Actions) eject beautimously.

I do have the brass extractor, and as for the newer target actions, I have never seen one, but the way it looks is the bottom side of the port seems to be lower than my action s bottom side , hence the clearance is there for the case to come out without a bind. the way this is now with this action, there is no way I can compete with it, so it will have to be a varmint rifle, If I would have known of this, I would have went with a Savage target action, I did not have any issues like this on my last 6.5x284 Rem action

The 284 case is about .500 diameter at the base, just ahead of the extractor groove. The 308, 243, '06, etc. brass are about .472 diameter. Sometimes, the bolt head recess is fine for "regular" brass but snug for 284 brass. This is compounded when the brass is tilted as the ejector pushes on one side and the extractor holds the other side in place.
We have encounterd this with numerous Rem 700s and solved it by slightly enlarging the diameter of the inside of the bolt snout. It doesn't take very much to make a difference.

Hello Jay

After a careful observation on how it working, I came to the conclusion that I have to file approx. .020 of the lip on the bottom side, this allowed the case to swing up a bit and out, that was all I could take off otherwise the lip would not make a good contact to pull the case out of the chamber.

PS now I need to find a stock
