Both the 6.5 Rem mag and the new 6.5 PRC will give a tad more velocity than a 6.5 284 simply because they hold about 100 fps more powder with a typical 140+ grn bullet. Of course, the 6.5 PRC does not have a belt.
All three are supposed to be compatible with short action Rifles.
If a 6.5 284 has developed the reputation as a barrel burner, then the other two will be even more so.
The idea behind the PRC is a larger capacity case for the Precision Rifle Shooters than the very popular 6.5 Creedmore.
If you have Rifle with a .473 bolt face, go with the 6.5 284. If you have a magnum bolt face, either of the other two will do, with the edge going to the new PRM because the non belted magnum might feed better from a magazine in disciplines that require consistent feeding.

Of course, all the rash of new 6.5's we've had in the last 5 to ten years are dancing around the much-demeaned .264 Winchester Magnum. Now the vaunted 6.5/.284 is being demeaned, perhaps to make way for the next super 6.5. Personally, I'm about maxed out on buying new rifles and brass. With all the rifles, primers, powder and bullets I've already accumulated, I have a lifetime of experimentation ahead of me without buying a new caliber.

Ive had a 6.5-284 for years and when the barrel is toast (it's 30 inches) it could get set back or it could get a new barrel or become just about anything. I agree with vtmarmot, I am going to have to see some real advances in velocity, barrel life and efficiency to buy any thing new.
