Hello,

I plan to make a 338 LM single shoot rifle, for shooting 1200 - 1500 meters, and sometime a bit more...

Lawton 8500 action, Mc Millan stock, Border barrel, NXS scope, etc...

Do you guys have experienced with .338 Imp ?
What gain of velocity can I expect compared to the standard version ?

( I plan to shoot SMK 300 grs, and the standard Lapua case can push them to 2800 - 2850 fps in a 30" )

Thanks.

Steve Shelp shoots an Improved 338 called the Yogi. Try contacting him by PM or ask gunsmith Dave Tooley who, I think, designed it.

There is another wildcat 300 LAPUA MAGNUM Improved that has been used for 1000 yard Benchrest but I cannot remember the shooters name.

Ask your question over on the 600/1000 yard Forum and you'll have a better chance of getting an answer.

The AI will give you about 100 fps. but 300SMK @ 2850fps. from a standard case sounds bit optimistic. Rad

I've got the same rig in the works, and have been told by more than one smith that 2,900-2,950 is within reach with a 32" tube.

Depending upon your reamer and shoulder angle, the case capacity is increased to about 120-125 grains of h2o, from the standard 108 or so.

Greg Tannel of Gre-tan designed and shot/shoots a 35 degree .338 Lapua Mag Imp. When I was building one for a customer, he was very helpful on load data and brass fit. Ph # 970-353-6176 and E-mail greg@gretanrifles.com

Good luck.

You should be able to reach 2900 to 3000fps depending on what the barrel likes.

US869, Retumbo and H50BMG seem popular powders. Fed 215M handles the ignition.

Also, consider the 338-300RUM improved family. Tomahawk, Edge are just a couple of wildcats. Same type of performance but using less expensive brass which is easier to fit in common actions(not that it matters in your case).

We reached out to 2.2km's this spring without any issue.

I personally shot a 139gr 6.5 Scenar that far as I have stopped using boomers.
