30x44 clicking

I have a 30x44. The brass used is Winchester Savage 300. I've developed a slight click at the top of extraction. I don't really want to make new brass - yet I will if I have to. Is there a small base die that I could use with this brass to get through the season (8-9 matches)? Thanks in advance.

Stick the head of the case into your resizing die backwards. If it won't go in 1/4 inch then IMO the answer is 'NO."

A friend had a similar problem. I found an old, non carbide 45 ACP sizing die for him at a gun show for $10. He uses the body of the die as a ring die for a .243 AI. I think that he may have polished it out a little on his lathe.

Yep, depending on the chamber dimension, brass, etc., a .45ACP die (non carbide) will often reduce the base dia. on a .473 family case another half thou. or so. The carbide versions have the carbide insert further up from the base of the die and don't size quite as much as a non carbide die.

It's an old trick of many of us Neanderthal, knuckle dragging, heathen .30 cal. HBR shooters.... -Al

Thanks for the info guys. I've ordered the die.
Al - you gave me an awesome idea for another project. More info to come later.

Al, go ahead and tell him how much bigger the back of his chamber needs to be :)

Nawww, I've quit giving that information out until someone asks :)

Too many "experts" here who just throw their cases away and make new ones "because they're clicking and they've been trimmed so many times anyways....."

"They probably need annealing to fix them."

yeahhhh, whatever,

I've given up!
