Can someone tell me what the weight of a 22'' HV 30BR barrel will be. And a 22'' LV barrel would be. I am building my frist HV 30BR I am using a Stolle Panda action RBLP, Edge stock, Night Force 12-42 BR scope and a Kregier 18 twist .330 with zero free bore.
I am trying to decide weather to use a LV barrel or a HV barrel or maybe a HV fluted barrel. But I want the one that I can balance out the best. Thanks

On my HV 30BR, I use a LV taper with the full 'straight' left on. It actually looks pretty heavy at 22 1/2 inches.

The reason I did this is because I had BRX Stock built with extra material in the right place. It is also filled in the rear with Flexane, which really deadens the entire assy and puts the weight where I want it.

I have a 10x60 March Scope on top of a Farley Action, the Rifle weighs 2 ounces under 13.5 pounds.

As for the fluted barrel, aside form the cosmetic appeal, why would you go that route for a 100-200 yard Benchrest Rifle??........jackie

If you want to get your build done quickly then Bruno usually has LV Kriegers in stock. Good luck with the build and welcome to VFS!

Fluting and BR do not go well together.

Another profile -- from one of the .30 BR "parents" (R.G. Robinett) is to use a hunter profile barrel, with the full 1.25 diameter running 5 inches. I use this; it is quite stiff. But note (gunsmith's forum) that Mike Bryant does NOT like this, he feels it drives the rifle straight back, which he finds harder on his shoulder. He wants more weight farther up the barrel. Doesn't affect accuracy, but Mike feels it affects the apparent recoil. "Balance" can be a tricky subject.

I never head of fluting ruining anything in BR, but it is a cost. For a .30 BR, it might be justified, as the barrels tend to last. And contrary to old wives tale no 751, fluting relieves stress -- or more accurately, distributes it more evenly. This from Dan Lilja, a barrel maker & engineer. I didn't understand the first time I heard that, either.
