.308 varmint loads

Hello all,

I know that this is primarily an accuracy-minded target shooting forum but I am hoping that some of you might have some .308 loads for Varget and light bullets(ie...110 vmax) for prairie dogs. I am hoping to launch the 110 V-max at max safe/accurate speeds and have no idea(other than the reloading manuals)what may be a good recipe.

I have a worked over 700 with a Kreiger tube on it and I have had great luck(by my standards) with Varget and 168 SMKs but would like to shoot the 110s at PDs. Is Varget too fast or too slow for this bullet or should I be using a completely different bullet/powder combo? I am hoping to use this on 300-600 yard dogs so I may need a different combo altogether.

I appreciate any and all suggestions. :)

Thanks guys,

Jaybic

Just checked Hornady's manual and they show powders from IMR 4198 to IMR 4895 with their 110 gr bullets. Something like 4895 would likely work best for accuracy since the case would be closer to full of powder. You might have accuracy problems with the light bullets since they likely have to jump a good distance before they hit the rifling.

For prairie dogs out to 300 yards the 110 gr V-Max or similar will likely work well if you can find an accurate (sub half or 3/4 MOA) load with them, but they would probably shed velocity too fast to be good much past 300 yards. They'd sure kill a pd past 300 yards, but the trajectory and wind would begin to mess the light bullets up.

Having shot a .243 at pd's I think that recoil might get a little ugly if you got into a "hot" dogtown. Whatever lights your fire though.

Try Sierra 110 gn HP and 4064

My dad used his deer rifle, a Remington Mohawk 600 with this combo for woodchucks. I still have a target of his with a 9/16" group (not far from average). Myself when I build my next 308 will be trying Sierra 135 gn HPBT,

308 varmint load

My favourate varmint load for my factory made CZ550 308 is 110g Sierra hollow point, 50g of W748 and WLR primer.Out of my sporter weight rifle this load will usually put 3 shots into .4" to .6"at 100yds, so it should be a cracker out of your custom barreled Rem 700. One pecularity of this load in my rifle is that the bullets like to be seated deep in the case. Am not sure what the seating depth is in inches but in metric it is OAL 65.4mm.:D

Howdy

Varget will work just fine, This is taken from hodgdons manual

110 GR. BAR XFB Hodgdon Varget .308" 2.800" 48.0 3134 42,100 CUP 50.0C 3237 46,100 CUP

Its using a barnes, but it should work for the v max. But would back it off a little to start.

I had good accuracy with Sierra 110 @ 3800fps but they went crazy beyond 200yd. Sierra 125s @ 3600fps were good to 500yd in 300H&H 10 twist. Kenny
